What does a backend software engineer intern do?

A Backend Software Engineer Intern assists in developing and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that power web and mobile applications. They work closely with senior engineers to write efficient code, troubleshoot issues, and ensure smooth data flow between users and servers. Interns may also participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation to support the overall software development process. This role provides hands-on experience with backend frameworks, database management, and industry best practices.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a backend software engineer intern?

To thrive as a Backend Software Engineer Intern, you typically need a solid understanding of programming languages like Java, Python, or Node.js, along with knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and database fundamentals. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), RESTful APIs, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns stand out in team settings. These competencies are crucial for building reliable backend services, collaborating efficiently, and contributing meaningful code in a fast-paced development environment.

Job description

If you are a backend engineer who enjoys solving complex, high-stakes problems, this is your opportunity to make a real difference at one of the world's leading financial institutions. At JPMorganChase, you will join a team where your engineering work directly supports the accuracy, integrity, and resolution of global payment investigations - work that matters to clients and to the firm every single day.

As a Software Engineer II at JPMorganChase within the Commercial & Investment Bank Payments Investigations Technology team in Tampa, FL, you will be a contributing member of an agile engineering team responsible for building and maintaining the backend systems that support payment exception handling, investigation workflows, and resolution processing. You will work with modern Java frameworks and distributed database technologies to deliver secure, reliable, and scalable solutions. This is a strong opportunity to grow your backend engineering expertise, deepen your knowledge of payments technology, and build your career within a collaborative and inclusive team environment.

Job Responsibilities

  • Execute software solutions across design, development, and technical troubleshooting, thinking beyond routine or conventional approaches to build solutions and break down complex technical problems
  • Create secure, high-quality production code and maintain algorithms that run synchronously with appropriate systems supporting payment investigation workflows
  • Develop and maintain backend services and REST APIs using Java and Spring Boot, ensuring high performance, reliability, and maintainability across modern Java versions
  • Leverage enterprise-authorized AI coding assist tools - including GitHub Copilot - to improve code quality, delivery speed, and productivity across complex deliverables such as code generation, refactoring, unit test creation, and documentation; validate outputs through peer review, automated testing, and secure coding standards and contribute learnings and reusable patterns to improve broader team effectiveness
  • Apply knowledge of tools within the Software Development Life Cycle toolchain, including enterprise-authorized AI-assisted development and automation capabilities, to improve the value realized by automation
  • Design, query, and optimize data solutions across distributed and relational database technologies to support payment investigation data needs
  • Proactively identify hidden problems and patterns in data, using insights to drive improvements to coding hygiene and system architecture
  • Contribute to software engineering communities of practice and events that explore new and emerging technologies
  • Add to a team culture of diversity, opportunity, inclusion, and respect

Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Formal training or certification on software engineering concepts and 2+ years applied experience
  • Hands-on practical experience in system design, application development, testing, and operational stability
  • Proficiency in Java backend development using Spring Boot, including REST API design, microservices patterns, and hands-on experience with modern Java versions (Java 17, Java 21, or Java 25)
  • Experience with distributed database technologies such as CockroachDB or similar NewSQL/distributed SQL platforms, including data modeling and query optimization
  • Working knowledge of relational database querying languages (SQL) and experience with high-performance query design
  • Hands-on experience using enterprise-authorized AI-assisted software development tools - including GitHub Copilot - with demonstrated ability to critically evaluate, validate, and refine AI-generated outputs for correctness, performance, and security
  • Understanding of responsible AI use in engineering workflows, including data sensitivity considerations, secure handling of inputs/outputs, and adherence to resiliency and security expectations; ability to guide peers on safe and effective usage within team practices
  • Overall knowledge of the Software Development Life Cycle
  • Solid understanding of agile methodologies, including CI/CD, application resiliency, and security best practices

Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Familiarity with payments domain concepts such as payment investigations, exception handling, transaction reconciliation, or payment message standards (e.g., ISO 20022, SWIFT)
  • Exposure to Gaussian or in-memory database technologies and high-performance query optimization techniques
  • Experience with observability and monitoring tooling such as Datadog, Grafana, or Splunk for production system health and incident response
  • Knowledge of event-driven architecture patterns and asynchronous messaging frameworks
  • Experience contributing to agile ceremonies, sprint planning, and cross-functional engineering collaboration
