Backend Intern information

What does a backend intern do?

A Backend Intern assists in developing and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that power web and mobile applications. They typically work with programming languages like Python, Java, or Node.js and interact with databases such as MySQL or MongoDB. Their responsibilities may include writing clean code, testing and debugging applications, and collaborating with front-end developers to ensure seamless integration. Backend Interns also help optimize application performance and may participate in code reviews and documentation.

What are some common challenges backend interns face when joining a new development team?

Backend Interns often encounter challenges such as understanding existing codebases, adapting to various development tools, and learning team-specific workflows. Integrating with ongoing projects may require quickly grasping the architecture and deployment processes used by the team. Open communication with mentors and proactive learning are key to overcoming these hurdles and contributing effectively. Many teams offer onboarding sessions and pair programming to help interns acclimate and build confidence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backend Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages like Python, Java, or Node.js, and a basic grasp of database concepts, often supported by coursework or personal projects. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), RESTful APIs, and cloud platforms is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication make candidates stand out. These skills and qualities are crucial for rapidly adapting to real-world development environments and contributing effectively to team-based software projects.

Job description

Software Engineering Intern - Summer 2027
About Us
At Prophet Security, we're not just building a platform that automates complex security tasks-we're building a company where every team member directly impacts customer success. You'll work closely with our customers, understand their needs, and see firsthand how your contributions make a difference.
Prophet Security's founding team brings more than 30 years of cybersecurity experience from leading companies, including Abnormal Security, Expel, Mandiant, McAfee, Oracle, Red Canary, Red Hat, Riverbed, and Symantec. We are focused on disrupting the $400 billion security labor market by building the future of automated security operations.
We're seeking graduating seniors for our Summer 2027 Software Engineering Internship. If you're excited to build impactful products, learn from an experienced team, and gain hands-on experience at a fast-growing startup, we encourage you to apply.
What Our Platform Does
Our platform analyzes security alerts, develops and executes investigation plans, and produces detailed findings and actionable recommendations. Security analysts review these investigations and provide context and feedback, which are continuously incorporated into future automation.
The Impact You'll Have
As a Software Engineering Intern, you'll contribute to the backend systems that power Prophet's platform. Working alongside experienced engineers and experts in product, machine learning, and cybersecurity, you'll help build services that ingest, process, and reason over large volumes of security data.
Example projects may include:
  • Integrations at scale: Contributing to extensible frameworks for integrations with third-party security systems, including SIEMs, EDR/XDR platforms, identity providers, and cloud and SaaS logs.
  • Proof-of-Value pipelines: Building reliable backend components that support fast customer onboarding and compelling proof-of-value experiences, from data ingestion to actionable insights.
  • Security data platforms: Helping design storage, indexing, and access patterns for highly dimensional, time-oriented security data used in real-time analysis and historical investigations.
  • AI-powered security workflows: Developing and evaluating agents and automation that help security teams investigate threats more quickly and effectively.

You'll write production code, participate in technical design, receive mentorship from experienced engineers, and take meaningful ownership of a project from development through deployment.
Our technology stack: AI-powered agents, data synthesis and correlation, security-tool integrations, Python, Go, React, and TypeScript.
Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, with an expected graduation date in 2027.
  • Experience with one or more relevant programming languages, such as Python or Go, through coursework, research, internships, or personal projects.
  • Understanding of fundamental software engineering concepts, including data structures, algorithms, testing, and system design.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and learn in a fast-moving environment.
  • Passion for building high-quality products and solving customer problems.

Experience with backend services, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, or machine learning is helpful but not required.
Our Culture
Our employees are our greatest asset. We provide a fun and inspiring environment in which to learn, create, and collaborate.
  • Customer Centricity: We place customers at the center of our decisions and strive to exceed their expectations.
  • Practicality over Perfection: We favor effective solutions, thoughtful tradeoffs, and agile decision-making.
  • Strive for Excellence: We hold ourselves to high standards and continuously improve.
  • Transparent Communication: We encourage open, honest dialogue and build trust through collaboration.
  • Unwavering Resilience: We persist through challenges and remain focused on achieving our goals.
  • Have Fun: We balance hard work with creativity, enjoyment, and a positive team environment.
Equal Opportunity
Prophet Security is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We value a diverse, global talent pool and the collaboration that results from an inclusive team. All applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran status, disability status, or any other legally protected characteristic.
Our hiring decisions are based exclusively on merit, qualifications, and business needs.
