What is a Backend Full Stack Engineer?

A Backend Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who specializes in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs of an application, while also having proficiency in front-end technologies. They are capable of working on both the backend and frontend parts of web applications, allowing them to develop end-to-end features and ensure seamless integration between the client and server sides. This role requires strong knowledge of programming languages such as JavaScript (Node.js), Python, or Java, as well as familiarity with databases, server architectures, and various web frameworks. Backend Full Stack Engineers often collaborate with designers, frontend developers, and other stakeholders to deliver complete and functional products.

How does a Backend Full Stack Engineer typically collaborate with frontend developers and other team members?

Backend Full Stack Engineers frequently work alongside frontend developers, product managers, and QA engineers to deliver seamless user experiences. They are responsible for building and maintaining server-side logic and APIs, ensuring data flows efficiently between the backend and frontend. Effective communication is essential, as they must align backend functionality with frontend requirements and participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and troubleshooting sessions. This collaborative environment fosters learning and often provides opportunities to contribute across the tech stack, enhancing both technical and interpersonal skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Backend Full Stack Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backend Full Stack Engineer, you need strong proficiency in server-side languages (such as Node.js, Python, or Java), database management, and a solid understanding of front-end technologies, usually supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like Express, Django, or Spring), version control systems (like Git), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required. Effective problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you collaborate across disciplines and deliver robust solutions. These skills ensure scalable, maintainable applications and seamless integration between backend and frontend systems, which are critical for organizational success.

Job description

Salary: $100 - $125k

Full-Stack Software Engineer

Luxome is a direct-to-consumer luxury comfort brand. Since launching in 2018, we've served over 600,000 customers and earned more than 30,000 reviews at a near-5-star average, primarily through luxome.com.

We're obsessed with the details. Every product, every page, every interaction is designed to make someone feel special. That obsession runs through the engineering work too, and we're hiring a mid-level full-stack engineer to help carry it forward.

You'll work on a headless commerce stack (Shopify Plus, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Sanity) with direct access to leadership.

What You'll Work On

  • Building features for luxome.com using TypeScript, React, and Shopify Hydrogen, with content served from Sanity CMS
  • Maintaining our Shopify Plus stack: custom apps, connectors, and Shopify Functions (Rust)
  • Integrating third-party services via GraphQL, REST, and webhooks
  • Supporting Google Cloud microservices that power our commerce infrastructure
  • Partnering with marketing and design (Figma) to translate business needs into shipped code
  • Contributing to bigger initiatives as they come up: wholesale, retail, international expansion, returns infrastructure

How You Work

  • You like to dive deep and understand a problem fully, not just its symptoms
  • You build with the customer in mind, not just the spec
  • You make sound tradeoff calls and know when to raise a flag
  • You're effective cross-functionally, working directly with marketing, design, and ops

What We're Looking For

  • 24 years of professional software engineering experience, ideally in eCommerce or a consumer product
  • Strong working knowledge of TypeScript, React, and modern JavaScript
  • Comfort with at least one backend language (Node, Python, Ruby, Go, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of REST and GraphQL
  • Able to commute to our Birmingham, MI office 5 days per week

Nice to Have

  • Experience with headless commerce (Hydrogen, Next.js Commerce, or similar)
  • Headless CMS experience (Sanity, Contentful, etc.)
  • Background working closely with marketing or design teams

What We Offer

  • $100,000$125,000 base salary, depending on experience
  • Medical, dental, and vision partially employer-paid
  • 401(k) with employer match
  • A 6,000 sq ft office in Birmingham, MI you will work directly with senior leadership, and our Chief Happiness Officer (our founders dog, Lux) is usually somewhere underfoot
  • Free product, 45% employee discount, 25% friends-and-family discount
  • Quarterly team events

Our Process

  • We'll email you to let you know if you're moving forward
  • A 30-minute phone or in-person screen with the hiring manager
  • A technical round may include coding, systems design, problem solving, or a walk-through of past work. We adapt the format to fit your background.
  • A final round in our Birmingham office: tour, team intros, and a longer conversation with the Founder & CEO
  • A final decision by email or call
  • We aim to wrap up the full process within four to six weeks.
