What does a backend engineer Java do?

A Backend Engineer Java is responsible for developing and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and application programming interfaces (APIs) using the Java programming language. They ensure that the backend of web applications or software systems is efficient, secure, and scalable. Their work often involves collaborating with frontend developers, designing system architecture, and optimizing performance to handle large volumes of user requests. Backend Java engineers often use frameworks such as Spring or Hibernate and work with databases like MySQL or PostgreSQL.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend engineer Java?

To thrive as a Backend Engineer Java, you need a solid understanding of Java programming, data structures, algorithms, and experience with backend frameworks, typically supported by a relevant degree or industry experience. Familiarity with tools and technologies such as Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, relational databases, and build systems like Maven or Gradle is commonly required. Problem-solving ability, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for excelling in collaborative and fast-paced development environments. These combined skills ensure robust, scalable backend systems that meet business needs and integrate smoothly within larger software architectures.

How does a backend engineer Java typically collaborate with frontend developers and other stakeholders in a project?

As a Backend Engineer Java, you will regularly collaborate with frontend developers to ensure seamless integration between server-side logic and user interfaces. This often involves participating in design discussions, clarifying API requirements, and troubleshooting integration issues. Key responsibilities

Job description

About Us
At 3Y Health, we are developing an AI business manager to streamline healthcare administration and address the complexity that consumes nearly 40 percent of the industry's revenue. Our comprehensive platform empowers clinician entrepreneurs to launch, manage, and grow their own private practices. By equipping independent providers with advanced AI and automation tools, we help them save time, build successful businesses, and deliver better care to their communities. 3Y Health is supported by over $200 million in funding from leading investors including Founders Fund, General Catalyst, SoftBank, and 8VC.
About the Role
We are seeking a Backend Engineer to design and scale high-performance backend systems that power our AI-first platform. The ideal candidate has experience building distributed services in languages such as Go, Java, Python, or TypeScript. You should be deeply familiar with modern API design and communication protocols (REST, gRPC, GraphQL), and have a passion for delivering reliable, secure, and scalable infrastructure.
Ideally, you've worked on services that support AI functionality-whether through integrating external AI APIs, managing ML inference pipelines, or supporting data infrastructure for model training. You're not just a code contributor-you care about how your systems are deployed, monitored, and managed in production. Bonus points if you've worked with regulated data environments like healthcare or fintech.
This role requires a hands-on engineer who thrives in cross-functional environments, collaborates effectively with product and frontend teams, and proactively builds for scale, compliance, and maintainability.
Responsibilities
  • Design and implement scalable backend services and APIs (REST, gRPC, GraphQL) that power our AI-driven healthcare platform
  • Collaborate with frontend, product, and design teams to translate product requirements into robust technical solutions
  • Integrate AI capabilities into services-building pipelines, managing inference, or orchestrating external AI APIs
  • Ensure service reliability by implementing best practices in deployment, monitoring, observability, logging, and continuous integration
  • Operate production systems end-to-end, including deployment, incident response, performance tuning, and cost optimization
  • Handle sensitive and regulated data (healthcare, payments) with strong attention to security, privacy, and compliance
  • Document technical process and create standard operating procedure within the engineering team
  • Drive backend architecture decisions, influencing system design, data models, and service interfaces
  • Mentor and elevate team capability, sharing best practices and helping to scale backend engineering excellence

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 5+ years of experience in backend engineering roles
  • Proficiency in one or more backend languages: Go, Java, Python, TypeScript
  • Deep knowledge of modern API protocols: REST, gRPC, GraphQL
  • Experience supporting production systems end-to-end: development, deployment, monitoring
  • Bonus: exposure to AI/ML services, whether through API integration or internal tooling
  • Bonus: experience with regulated data domains like healthcare or financial services
  • Ability to work 5 days a week in ourSan Francisco office with a fully in-person team

Compensation
The estimated salary range for this role is $205,000-$250,000. Total compensation for this position may also include stock options. Note that total compensation for this position will be determined by each individual's relevant qualifications, work experience, skills, and other factors.
