Backend Engineer Java information

What does a backend engineer Java do?

A Backend Engineer Java is responsible for developing and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and application programming interfaces (APIs) using the Java programming language. They ensure that the backend of web applications or software systems is efficient, secure, and scalable. Their work often involves collaborating with frontend developers, designing system architecture, and optimizing performance to handle large volumes of user requests. Backend Java engineers often use frameworks such as Spring or Hibernate and work with databases like MySQL or PostgreSQL.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend engineer Java?

To thrive as a Backend Engineer Java, you need a solid understanding of Java programming, data structures, algorithms, and experience with backend frameworks, typically supported by a relevant degree or industry experience. Familiarity with tools and technologies such as Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, relational databases, and build systems like Maven or Gradle is commonly required. Problem-solving ability, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for excelling in collaborative and fast-paced development environments. These combined skills ensure robust, scalable backend systems that meet business needs and integrate smoothly within larger software architectures.

How does a backend engineer Java typically collaborate with frontend developers and other stakeholders in a project?

As a Backend Engineer Java, you will regularly collaborate with frontend developers to ensure seamless integration between server-side logic and user interfaces. This often involves participating in design discussions, clarifying API requirements, and troubleshooting integration issues. You’ll also engage with product managers, QA engineers, and sometimes DevOps teams to align on project goals, timelines, and deployment strategies. Effective communication is key to translating business requirements into reliable backend solutions and maintaining smooth workflows across the team.

What is the difference between Backend Engineer Java vs Backend Developer Java?

AspectBackend Engineer JavaBackend Developer Java
Primary FocusDesigning, developing, and maintaining server-side applications and systemsImplementing and coding backend functionalities based on specifications
ResponsibilitiesSystem architecture, performance optimization, API developmentWriting code, debugging, integrating databases
Skills & CertificationsJava, Spring, REST APIs, SQL, cloud platformsJava, Spring, SQL, version control, testing tools
Work EnvironmentCollaborative teams, project planning, architecture designCode implementation, debugging, feature development

Both roles require Java expertise and similar certifications, but Backend Engineer Java typically involves higher-level system design and architecture responsibilities, while Backend Developer Java focuses more on coding and implementing features. Employers often see these roles as complementary within software development teams.

Senior Back-End Developer, Rumble Studio

Toronto, ON • On-site

CA$155K - CA$195K/yr

Full-time

This job post has expired 1 day ago. Applications are no longer accepted.

Job description

Rumble Studio is seeking a Senior Back-End Engineer to design, build, and operate the backend systems that power our real-time, multiuser video production application. This is a senior individual contributor role for someone who owns services end to end: you'll architect them, implement them in TypeScript and Golang, deploy and monitor them in our containerized infrastructure, and continuously improve performance, reliability, and maintainability as usage grows.

Our environment is centered on live streaming and collaborative video workflows, with backend services backing a multiuser canvas where responsiveness and low-latency data flow matter. You should be comfortable designing APIs across REST and GraphQL, working with PostgreSQL and Redis to support stream-backed workloads and real-time state, and reasoning about distributed systems that must remain resilient under network latency and bursty traffic.

You'll work closely with product, design, and other engineers to turn ambiguous feature requests into clear technical plans, apply strong systems design fundamentals to complex problems, and use modern AI-assisted development tools effectively because you understand the underlying architectures. Day to day, you'll troubleshoot issues across application, data, and infrastructure layers, own deployment practices alongside the team, and help raise the engineering bar through code reviews, mentorship, and high-quality implementation decisions.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and operate backend services for a real-time, multiuser video production application written in TypeScript and Golang. Own systems from architecture through implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing optimization. Develop and maintain REST and GraphQL APIs, optimize data access using PostgreSQL and Redis, and ensure services remain fast, reliable, and resilient to latency and operational issues. Collaborate with cross-functional partners to break down complex problems, use AI-assisted tooling effectively with a strong grasp of system fundamentals, and help elevate engineering standards through reviews, mentorship, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications
  • Strong backend engineering experience building production systems in TypeScript, Golang, or both, with the ability to ramp quickly across the stack.
  • Solid SQL fundamentals and hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and Redis in performance-sensitive, real-time or distributed environments.
  • Experience designing and implementing backend services and APIs, including REST and GraphQL, for complex applications.
  • Strong systems design skills and the ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy in complex, multi-service architectures.
  • Experience working with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes, and comfort owning deployment practices.
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills across application, data, and infrastructure layers, including production incident diagnosis and mitigation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with video technologies, live streaming workflows, codecs, or media-processing systems.
  • Experience administering or configuring servers and virtual machines, and working directly in Linux-based production environments.
  • Experience with concurrent programming or event-driven patterns used in real-time collaboration and multiuser backends.
  • Experience owning and maintaining infrastructure as code (IaC) for services you operate (Terraform, Pulumi, ArgoCD, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of authentication and authorization patterns such as OAuth2 or OpenID Connect.
  • Ability to use AI-assisted development tools effectively while demonstrating strong understanding of the underlying system design and code quality.
