What is a backend database developer?

Backend Database Developers are IT professionals who design, build, and maintain the databases that power websites and applications. They focus on how data is stored, accessed, and managed behind the scenes, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and security. Their work includes creating database schemas, optimizing queries, writing stored procedures, and collaborating with other developers to integrate databases with application code. They often use technologies like SQL, NoSQL, and various database management systems. Their expertise is essential for handling large volumes of data and supporting business operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend database developer?

To thrive as a Backend Database Developer, you need expertise in database design, SQL programming, and data modeling, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with relational and NoSQL databases (such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB), cloud platforms, and certifications like Oracle Certified Professional are highly valuable. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective collaboration are standout soft skills for this position. These skills are critical for ensuring data integrity, optimizing performance, and supporting scalable, reliable backend systems.

They collaborate with frontend teams to design APIs and data models that meet user requirements, and with DevOps to optimize database deployment and scaling strategies. Regular communication with data analysts helps ensure that data structures support reporting and analytics needs. This collaborative environment encourages cross-functional problem-solving and continuous learning.

Position Summary
The Senior Oracle Backend DBA is responsible for the stability, performance, security, and lifecycle management of Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) 12.2.12 and its supporting database tiers. This role manages all backend database operations—including patching, cloning, tuning, disaster recovery, and high-availability—ensuring the EBS platform remains resilient and
compliant as it transitions into the broader UNIFI operations framework referenced in the EBS Transformation Kick-Off Meeting .

Key Responsibilities
Database Administration & Performance
• Administer Oracle databases supporting EBS 12.2.12, including RAC/standalone environments.
• Perform performance tuning (SQL, instance, memory, storage, indexing) to ensure optimal application responsiveness.
• Manage tablespaces, partitions, statistics, and segment housekeeping.
• Diagnose and resolve database-level failures, locking issues, and performance degradation.
EBS Application Tier & Backend Support
• Support EBS 12.2.12 backend components including database schemas (APPS, APPLSYS, etc.), workflow schemas, concurrent processing schemas, and technology stack objects.
• Collaborate with EBS Admins and technical teams to ensure backend readiness for new customizations, RICEW deployments, and code migrations in alignment with UNIFI operational expectations discussed in the EBS Transformation Kick-Off Meeting.
Patching, Cloning & Lifecycle Management
• Execute Oracle CPU/PSU/RU patching and EBS tech-stack updates (AD/TXK).
• Manage EBS 12.2 online patching (ADOP) from the backend perspective, ensuring editioning objects and database components comply with EBR requirements.
• Perform environment cloning (sanitization, post-clone steps, application tier re-linking) across DEV/TEST/PROD.
Backup, Recovery & High Availability
• Develop and maintain RMAN backup strategies and retention policies.
• Implement DR solutions and participate in DR planning/testing.

Required Skills & Experience
• 8–10+ years Oracle DBA experience with at least 5 years supporting Oracle EBS R12.2.x.
• Strong expertise in Oracle Database 12c/19c, SQL tuning, ASM, OEM, and RAC.
• Hands-on experience supporting EBS 12.2.12: schemas, workflows, concurrent managers, and backend integrations.
• Deep knowledge of EBR/ADOP online patching, editioned objects, and patching cycles.
• Proficiency with RMAN, Data Guard, backup/recovery strategies, and HA/DR architectures.
• Experience supporting large, mission-critical ERP systems and multi-environment lifecycle management.
• Strong Linux/Unix shell scripting and automation capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with OCI-hosted EBS or hybrid cloud environments.
• Exposure to OIC-integrated environments and backend impacts of interface workloads.
• Knowledge of architecture planning for ERP modernization or large-scale EBS transformations.
