What is a Backbone Engineer?

A Backbone Engineer is a professional who specializes in designing, implementing, and maintaining the core infrastructure of a network, often referred to as the 'backbone.' This typically involves working with high-capacity routers, switches, and other networking equipment to ensure efficient, reliable data transmission across large-scale networks, such as those used by internet service providers or enterprise organizations. Backbone Engineers play a crucial role in optimizing network performance, troubleshooting complex issues, and ensuring the security and scalability of network architecture.

Job description

Application deadline: Jul 17, 2026
Today, Amazon Web Services provides a highly reliable, scalable, low-cost infrastructure platform in the cloud that powers hundreds of thousands of businesses in 190 countries around the world. The AWS Cloud infrastructure is built around Regions and Availability Zones (AZs). AWS Regions provide multiple, physically separated and isolated Availability Zones which are connected with low latency, high throughput, and highly redundant networking.

These Availability Zones offer AWS customers an easier and more effective way to design and operate applications and databases, making them more highly available, fault tolerant, and scalable than traditional single datacenter infrastructures or multi-datacenter infrastructures. How would you like to come be part of the team that builds out that low latency, high throughput, and highly redundant network.
Amazon Web Services is looking for a highly motivated, commercial and technically savvy Senior Backbone Network Developer to help develop and scale one of the world's largest and most complex networks.

We develop new and innovative ways to scale and expand our network, whilst delivering operational excellence to our stakeholders. This opportunity sits within our Backbone Network Development organization for the Americas, where the team is responsible for planning, developing and acquiring the network that drive Amazon's internal infrastructure. The Senior Backbone Network Developer will be a subject matter expert in the telecommunications marketplace, experienced with vendors, physical network infrastructure, optical technologies and backbone network engineering.

This role requires collaboration, and synthesising a technical vendor strategy across the AWS network topology. This individual would actively drive commercial and technical vendor network strategy within North America, working with suppliers, technology partners, as well as the AWS service teams to meet our customer's demands. By applying a unique blend of industry and technology experience, you will work closely with both external and internal teams to find creative, cost effective, and often unusual solutions to meet Amazon's ongoing growth and expansion needs worldwide.

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on.

We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we're looking for talented people who want to help.
You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers.

And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Key job responsibilities
Serve as a key member of the Americas Backbone Network Development team helping to drive overall Network Infrastructure strategy.
Execute the strategic backbone network plans and provide regular progress updates.
Identify suppliers and develop technical and commercial solutions that solve for wavelengths, dark fibre and submarine cable capacity

Organize, track, and coordinate with vendors and internal teams to deliver new backbone capacity for Amazon.
Work with network planners and engineers to ensure the most efficient and cost effective network topology is delivered.
Work closely with finance partners, collaborating on budget creation, business case development, deal inspection, and supplier invoicing.

Track overall telecoms market trends and developments in terms of vendor technologies, coverage, cost and deal structures.
Manage the suppliers onboarding, relationship, performance, and service quality.
Anticipate bottlenecks, manage risk and escalations, and balance the business needs versus technical constraints.
