What is a back end developer?

A Back End Developer is a programmer who specializes in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and application functionality that power websites and web applications. Unlike front end developers, who focus on the visual and interactive elements users see, back end developers work behind the scenes to ensure data is stored, processed, and delivered correctly. They typically use programming languages like Python, Java, Ruby, or PHP, and interact with databases such as MySQL or MongoDB. Their work is crucial for making sure applications run smoothly, securely, and efficiently.

What is a back end developer?

A back end developer is a computer science professional who specializes in functionality that takes place on the server side or backend. As a back end developer, you write code to create software that solves a business need. Your responsibilities are to research the needs of either your employer, or a particular industry, find a problem, and create a software solution. A back end developer differs from a traditional web developer, or front end developer, in that back-end software may not have a user interface or even have exposure to the web.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a back end developer?

To thrive as a Back End Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or Node.js, along with a solid understanding of databases and API design, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with frameworks such as Spring or Django, version control systems like Git, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS or Azure) is often required, with certifications in these areas considered beneficial. Problem-solving, effective communication, and teamwork are crucial soft skills that help developers collaborate and address complex technical challenges. These competencies are vital for building reliable, scalable systems that support front-end applications and ensure robust product performance.

What are some common challenges back end developers face when integrating with front-end teams?

Back End Developers often encounter challenges when aligning data structures and APIs with front-end requirements, especially as user interface needs evolve rapidly during development. Effective communication and regular collaboration with front-end developers are essential to ensure that endpoints, data formats, and error handling are well-coordinated. Additionally, maintaining consistent documentation and using tools like Swagger or Postman can help streamline integration and reduce misunderstandings between teams.

Summary
We are launching a new, greenfield product, and we are building a newly assembled, cross-functional product team to deliver it. We are seeking a Backend Software Engineer to help define, build, and scale the backend foundation of this product from inception through production.
This role offers the opportunity to apply backend best practices and modern frameworks in a new product setting, while operating within the quality, security, and scalability standards of an enterprise environment. You will collaborate closely with a full-stack team to deliver intuitive, high-quality user experiences from MVP through full production.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop backend services for a new product using TypeScript and NestJS or similar frameworks
  • Contribute to architectural decisions with a focus on scalability, reliability, and long-term maintainability
  • Build and maintain APIs and backend services that support data-driven and ML-enabled features
  • Develop and manage data access layers using Prisma or equivalent ORM technologies
  • Containerize backend services using Docker or equivalent and support deployment into enterprise-managed environments
  • Help mature early-stage prototypes and MVPs into production-ready systems
  • Ensure backend systems meet enterprise standards for performance, security, and operational stability
  • Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and technical documentation
  • Balance rapid product iteration with enterprise engineering best practices

The skills and experience you bring:
  • 3+ years of professional backend software development experience
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript
  • Hands-on experience with NestJS or similar Node.js frameworks (e.g., Express, Fastify)
  • Experience using Prisma or other modern ORM libraries
  • Practical experience with Docker in development and production environments
  • Demonstrated experience taking an MVP or prototype to production
  • Strong understanding of backend architecture, API design, and database fundamentals
  • Comfortable collaborating across multiple disciplines in a product-focused team

What makes you stand out?
  • Experience with Python
  • Familiarity with Angular (helpful but not required)
  • Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP
  • Experience supporting data-intensive or ML-enabled applications
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and modern deployment workflows

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This role is based in either Austin, Texas or Phoenix, Arizona. This role interfaces with teams distributed across multiple geographies and functions, requiring strong communication and organizational skills.
