What does an Azure IoT Architect do?

An Azure IoT Architect is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing Internet of Things (IoT) solutions using Microsoft's Azure platform. They work on integrating devices, data, and cloud services to create scalable and secure IoT systems. Their role involves selecting appropriate Azure services, ensuring data security, managing device connectivity, and optimizing the overall architecture for performance and cost-effectiveness. Azure IoT Architects often collaborate with developers, engineers, and business stakeholders to deliver end-to-end IoT solutions tailored to organizational needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Azure IoT Architect?

To thrive as an Azure IoT Architect, you need strong expertise in cloud computing, IoT solutions design, networking, and security, often supported by a degree in computer science or engineering and relevant Microsoft certifications. Familiarity with Azure IoT Hub, Azure Digital Twins, device provisioning, and ARM templates is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you collaborate with stakeholders and translate business needs into technical solutions. These skills ensure robust, scalable, and secure IoT architectures that meet organizational goals and industry standards.

How does an Azure IoT Architect typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during solution development?

As an Azure IoT Architect, you will work closely with engineers, developers, project managers, and client stakeholders to design and implement IoT solutions tailored to business needs. Collaboration often involves leading technical discussions, providing architectural guidance, and ensuring security and scalability requirements are met. You may also coordinate with data analysts and cloud operations teams to integrate IoT data streams and manage deployments. Clear communication and the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical colleagues are essential in this role.

Job description

Req ID: 375962

NTT DATA strives to hire exceptional, innovative and passionate individuals who want to grow with us. If you want to be part of an inclusive, adaptable, and forward-thinking organization, apply now.

We are currently seeking a The IoT / Edge Architect to join our team in Bethesda (REMOTE), Maryland (US-MD), United States (US).

Job Summary:

The IoT / Edge Architect will serve as the technical lead for the design, integration, and management of secure, scalable IoT and edge computing solutions supporting the client. This role is responsible for architecting the ingestion, processing, and secure management of dosimeter and sensor data from distributed edge devices through AWS GovCloud, ensuring compliance with DoD Impact Level 4 (IL4) and FedRAMP requirements. The architect will collaborate with cross-functional teams—including cloud, cybersecurity, DevSecOps, and stakeholders—to deliver resilient, compliant, and high-performing IoT solutions that support mission-critical and safety objectives.

Job Duties:

  • IoT/Edge Solution Architecture: Lead the technical strategy and design for inheriting, integrating, and modernizing client’s IoT-based radiation exposure tracking environment. Define requirements for data ingestion, modeling, system interoperability, and secure device management.
  • Cloud Integration & Compliance: Architect and oversee AWS GovCloud landing zone setup, ensuring government compliance, secure network segmentation, and adherence to DoD CC SRG IL4 standards. Define and enforce cloud security configurations, policies, and audit requirements.
  • Device Management & Security: Implement secure onboarding, provisioning, and lifecycle management for IoT devices (e.g., dosimeters, gateways) using AWS IoT Device Management, X.509 certificates, and mTLS. Oversee certificate rotation, anomaly detection, and device posture monitoring via AWS IoT Device Defender.
  • Data Pipeline & Processing: Design and optimize data flows from edge devices to cloud storage (S3), message queues (SQS), and processing layers (Lambda, Glue, Aurora). Ensure data encryption at rest and in transit, and implement robust ETL pipelines for legacy and real-time data.
  • DevSecOps & Automation: Guide DevSecOps teams in automating infrastructure deployment (IaC), compliance checks, and continuous monitoring using AWS-native tools (CloudFormation, Config, CloudWatch, Security Hub).
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as the senior technical representative in engagements with stakeholders, Client, and NTT DATA leadership. Communicate architecture decisions, risks, and solution tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Documentation & Knowledge Transfer: Maintain comprehensive architecture documentation, technical artifacts, and processes to enable seamless scaling and knowledge continuity across future task orders

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master's level degree in Computer, Electrical or Electronics Engineering or Mathematics with field of concentration in computer science.
  • Minimum 10 years of professional engineering experience in distributed systems, embedded software, or edge/IoT architectures, including 5 years in a senior or lead architect role.
  • Minimum 5 years of  design and implementation experience with IoT or edge platforms, including development of device‑to‑gateway communication, edge processing pipelines, and secure device‑management workflows.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with modern programming languages used in IoT/edge systems (such as Python, C/C++, Go, or Java)
  • Minimum 3 years of experience architecting solutions on AWS, Azure, or GCP, including at least 1 year deploying or designing AWS IoT, AWS Greengrass, or equivalent edge‑compute frameworks.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience applying security controls for IoT/edge systems, including certificate‑based authentication, secure firmware update processes, FIPS‑compliant cryptography, and RBAC/IAM models.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience developing containerized or microservices‑based architectures.
  • Minimum 2 years integrating edge or IoT systems into secure CI/CD pipelines, automated deployment frameworks, and environment‑as‑code configurations.
  • Ability to obtain a secret clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with AWS IoT, AWS Greengrass, or Azure IoT Edge in regulated or mission‑critical environments.
  • Background supporting DoD, DHS, or other federal programs involving operational technology or field‑deployed sensing devices.
  • Knowledge of secure firmware‑update pipelines, device‑identity lifecycle management, and modern hardware‑root‑of‑trust technologies.
  • Familiarity with Navy or government cybersecurity frameworks, including RMF, STIGs, and supply‑chain–risk controls for connected devices.
  • Experience designing IoT or edge solutions involving environmental constraints such as intermittent connectivity, constrained compute, or ruggedized hardware.
  • Understanding of large‑scale telemetry ingestion, time‑series data architectures, and device‑fleet operational monitoring.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams—DevSecOps, cybersecurity, test automation, data engineering, and device engineering—within an Agile delivery model.
  • Relevant industry certifications (e.g., AWS Solutions Architect, IoT‑related certifications, security certifications such as CISSP or CCSP).
