What is an axp?

An AXP job typically refers to a role within the Architect Experience Program (AXP), which is a training requirement for becoming a licensed architect. The AXP, overseen by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), helps aspiring architects gain essential experience in key practice areas. Jobs under AXP include internships or entry-level positions in architecture firms, where participants work under licensed architects to develop their skills. Completion of AXP is required before taking the Architect Registration Examination (ARE).

What does an axp do?

As an AXP Participant, your daily duties often include assisting senior architects with design development, preparing construction documents, participating in client or team meetings, and conducting site visits. You'll be exposed to varied project phases, such as schematic design, construction administration, and project management tasks, all while documenting your experience for NCARB reporting. Collaboration is central, as you'll work closely with project architects, engineers, and other design professionals. This hands-on involvement helps you gain the broad experience required for licensure and a successful career in architecture.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the axp position?

To thrive as an Architectural Experience Program (AXP) Participant, you need a degree in architecture or a related field, a strong understanding of design principles, and the ability to use industry-standard drafting and modeling software. Familiarity with tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) AXP system is essential, along with progress tracking toward licensure. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and effective time management are key soft skills for collaborating on projects and learning from mentors. These competencies are crucial because AXP is structured to prepare emerging professionals for architectural licensure by ensuring exposure to core practice areas and fostering a professional work ethic.

For over 50 years, we’ve designed innovative spaces for restaurant and retail brands nationwide, but it’s our team that makes us who we are. We’re looking for an Architectural Project Manager to lead projects, mentor teams, and help bring our clients’ visions to life.

This role reports directly to an Architecture Program Manager and manages small to medium projects/programs in the commercial retail and restaurant sectors. If you thrive on balancing design and delivery while supporting and growing those around you, we’d love to hear from you.

What You’ll Do
  • Project Leadership
    1. Manage and oversee multiple architectural projects from concept through construction documents.
    2. Delegate, review, and take responsibility for the work of CAD Drafters, Project Coordinators, and Project Managers you supervise.
    3. Self-perform tasks as needed to keep projects on track.
    4. Assist with billing, construction administration, budgeting, and proposal development.
  • Team & Client Collaboration
    1. Coordinate with internal disciplines (MEP, Civil, etc.) and serve as the primary communicator across the team.
    2. Lead client communication, keeping stakeholders informed and engaged throughout the project lifecycle.
    3. Maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, and vendors.
  • Design & Documentation
    1. Prepare and review architectural construction documents and specifications.
    2. Ensure compliance with building codes and project requirements.
    3. Support the development of innovative yet practical design solutions.
What You’ll Bring
  • 6–10 years of experience in commercial architecture, with emphasis on restaurant and retail projects.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture preferred.
  • Strong client communication and interaction experience.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills; able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, while also driving independent results.
  • Knowledge of building codes and MPE systems required.
  • Software proficiency: AutoCAD, Photoshop, SketchUp, Microsoft Office; Revit experience a plus.
  • Licensure or path to licensure not required but considered a plus. We support IDP/AXP requirements and pay for licensing exams upon successful completion during your tenure at Interplan.
Why You’ll Love Working Here
  • Collaborative, people-first environment where your ideas matter.
  • Professional development reimbursement and continuing education opportunities.
  • Paid parental leave and flexible benefits that support you through every stage of life.
  • Active employee-led activities committee and company culture initiatives.
  • Comprehensive benefits:
    1. Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
    2. Short-Term Disability and employer-paid Long-Term Disability & Life Insurance
    3. Flexible Spending & Dependent Care Accounts
    4. Employee Assistance Program and Health & Wellness Program
    5. Paid Holidays and PTO
    6. 401(k) with employer match + access to a financial advisor.
    7. Performance-based bonus program.

At Interplan, we’re a people first organization that believes great outcomes come from great relationship within our team and with every client we serve. We combine a high-accountability, high-support environment with a genuinely collaborative culture where ideas are welcomed, wins are shared, and learning never stops.
