What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Axle Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Axle Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, materials science, and structural analysis, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD software, FEA tools, and knowledge of industry standards like ISO and SAE are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in designing reliable components and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring axle performance, safety, and compliance in automotive or industrial applications.

What are axles and what do they do in vehicles?

An axle is a central shaft for a rotating wheel or gear, commonly found in vehicles. In cars and trucks, axles connect the wheels and help support the vehicle's weight while enabling the wheels to rotate. They are crucial for transferring power from the engine to the wheels, allowing the vehicle to move. There are different types of axles, such as drive axles and dead axles, depending on their role in the vehicle's drivetrain. Regular maintenance of axles is important for safety and vehicle performance.

Both Axle and Gear Technicians work in automotive repair and manufacturing environments, focusing on different drivetrain components. Axle technicians specialize in axle assembly, repair, and maintenance, while Gear Technicians focus on gear systems within transmissions and differentials. Understanding these distinctions helps employers and job seekers identify the right roles based on skills and certifications.

What are some common challenges faced by Axle Technicians when diagnosing and repairing heavy vehicle axles?

Axle Technicians often encounter challenges such as accurately identifying the root cause of axle-related issues, especially when symptoms overlap with other drivetrain components. Working with heavy vehicle axles also requires handling large, cumbersome parts and using specialized tools, which can be physically demanding. Additionally, staying updated with the latest axle technologies and manufacturer-specific repair procedures is important to ensure safe and efficient repairs. Collaboration with other mechanics and service advisors is common to provide comprehensive solutions and maintain workflow efficiency.

Job Description
About the team: The Advanced Manufacturing Project Engineer will be an integral member of a dynamic, collaborative team at ZF Axle Drives Marysville, LLC-part of Division E, Axle Drives. In this role, the engineer will partner closely with both the international Assembly Planning organization and the local Marysville Engineering team to advance innovation and operational excellence in axle drive manufacturing. This position is critical in shaping technical strategy and assembly planning across the North America region, supporting industrialization efforts and new program launches while ensuring full alignment with ZF standards and customer requirements.
What you can look forward to as the Advanced Manufacturing Project Engineer:

Responsibilities include pre planning and concept development, capital investment analysis, specification creation, equipment vendor evaluation and selection, oversight of equipment installation and commissioning (including first run off), and the release of production equipment and manufacturing procedures.
  • Develop capital investment models to estimate equipment costs and analyze cost and pricing variances between new investments and equipment changeovers.
  • Conduct vendor assessments through on site evaluations and performance analyses to support supplier selection and capability verification.
  • Serve as the primary customer liaison, identifying product and process requirements for new and existing programs and translating them into equipment specifications and assembly process definitions (e.g., design changes, new feature integration).
  • Coordinate the planning phases of equipment installation for pre series and launch-management projects, working closely with the Manufacturing Planning team in Germany to ensure alignment with global standards and timelines.
  • Establish planning tools, procedures, and corrective action strategies for production and maintenance teams to minimize operational downtime and mitigate commercial risk associated with line stoppages or cycle time deviations.
  • Support change management activities related to launch timing and engineering change requests, including quotations, validation planning, scheduling, and communication with impacted departments and project stakeholders.

Your profile as the Advanced Manufacturing Project Engineer:
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical/Manufacturing Technology or related Engineering field.

  • 3+ years of in-plant manufacturing engineering experience
  • 2+ years of experience with Bills of Material (BOM) structures, quoting, manufacturing equipment/tooling planning, design change procedures, and the technical and manufacturing facets of product development.
  • Proven project management experience; PMP certification preferred.
  • Understanding of passenger car powertrain technology and basic knowledge of axle/driveline technologies.
