What Is an AWS Developer?

An AWS developer works with programs or application software on the Amazon Web Services cloud-based platform. Their duties include writing code for applications that optimize the use of AWS services, such as data storage and content delivery. Developers often build in the mobile hub, where they can quickly configure features like user authentication and push notifications, and sell independently developed software they develop in the AWS Marketplace. For developers with proficient experience in AWS, there are multiple types of certification exams available.

What are AWS Developers?

AWS Developers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain applications on Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure. They use AWS services to build scalable, secure, and reliable cloud-based solutions, often working with tools like AWS Lambda, EC2, S3, and DynamoDB. Their responsibilities include writing code, automating cloud deployments, managing cloud resources, and ensuring applications run efficiently in the AWS environment. AWS Developers often collaborate with DevOps teams and leverage AWS best practices for cloud application development.

What are some common challenges AWS Developers face when integrating new cloud services into existing applications?

AWS Developers often encounter challenges when integrating new cloud services, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, managing security configurations, and optimizing for cost efficiency. Navigating AWS's broad range of services requires a strong understanding of both the technical requirements of the application and best practices in cloud architecture. Collaboration with DevOps, security teams, and other developers is key to a smooth integration process, as is staying updated with AWS’s frequent service updates and feature releases.

  • Support AWS resources including S3, SQS, DynamoDB, RDS/PostgreSQL, OpenSearch Serverless, Lambda, Step Functions, AppConfig, API Gateway, CloudWatch, and Bedrock.
  • Troubleshoot deployment, permissions, networking, and runtime issues across environments.
  • Write and update operational documentation, runbooks, and developer notes.
  • Review CloudWatch logs and metrics to diagnose Lambda, queue, and workflow behavior.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers on code reviews, testing, refactoring, and production readiness.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, backlog refinement, sprint planning, demos, and retrospectives.
  • Work closely with product and engineering teammates to clarify requirements, estimate work, and deliver incremental product improvements.
  • Respond constructively to rapid new requirements and changes in scope while keeping implementation quality and maintainability in focus.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 1+ years of hands-on AWS cloud development or infrastructure experience.
  • Working knowledge of TypeScript or JavaScript.
  • Experience with AWS CDK, CloudFormation, Terraform, or another infrastructure-as-code tool.
  • Familiarity with serverless AWS services, especially Lambda, S3, SQS, DynamoDB, API Gateway, and CloudWatch.
  • Basic understanding of IAM roles, policies, principals, and least-privilege access.
  • Comfortable using Git, command-line tools, npm, and AWS CLI.
  • Ability to read existing code, follow established patterns, and ask clear technical questions.
  • Strong written communication for documentation, pull requests, and issue updates.
  • Comfortable working in an Agile team environment with evolving product requirements.
  • Collaborative team worker who communicates blockers early and contributes to shared delivery goals.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a federal government security clearance (US Citizenship required).
  • This is a hybrid role requiring 1-2 days onsite / week

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with AWS CDK in TypeScript.
  • Experience with OpenSearch or OpenSearch Serverless.
