What is an aviation network engineer?

Aviation Network Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and maintain the computer networks that support aviation operations, including communication, navigation, security, and data management systems at airports and within airlines. They ensure that networks are reliable, secure, and compliant with industry regulations to support critical functions such as air traffic control and passenger information systems. Their role is essential for integrating advanced technologies in aviation and maintaining smooth and safe operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an aviation network engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Aviation Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of computer networking, telecommunications, and aviation communication protocols, often supported by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with industry-specific systems such as ACARS, SATCOM, and certifications like CCNA or CompTIA Network+ are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you excel in managing critical aviation network infrastructure. These skills ensure reliable, secure, and efficient data and voice communications vital for safe and efficient aviation operations.

How does an aviation network engineer typically collaborate with air traffic control and airport IT teams?

Aviation Network Engineers work closely with air traffic control and airport IT teams to ensure the reliability and security of communication, navigation, and surveillance networks. This collaboration often involves regular meetings to discuss system requirements, troubleshoot connectivity issues, and implement technology upgrades. Effective communication and coordination are key, as any network downtime can impact flight safety and airport operations. Engineers may also be involved in training IT staff on new systems and responding rapidly to any incidents that could affect air traffic communications.

What is the difference between Aviation Network Engineer vs Aviation Systems Technician?

AspectAviation Network EngineerAviation Systems Technician
CredentialsNetwork certifications (e.g., Cisco, CompTIA), FAA certificationsAircraft maintenance licenses, FAA certifications
Work EnvironmentAirports, airline IT departments, communication hubsAircraft, maintenance facilities, airports
Industry UsageDesigning and maintaining communication networks for aviationMaintaining aircraft systems and avionics

The Aviation Network Engineer focuses on designing, implementing, and maintaining communication and data networks within the aviation industry. In contrast, the Aviation Systems Technician specializes in repairing and servicing aircraft systems and avionics. Both roles require FAA certifications and work in aviation environments, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

We are supporting the integration, verification, and test of next-generation aviation and mission systems utilizing deterministic Ethernet-based Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN), Time-Triggered Ethernet (TTE) and Digital Backbone (DBB) architectures within Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) and Software-in-the-Loop (SWIL) environments. We are seeking engineers who thrive in complex integration environments and are passionate about advancing secure, resilient, and interoperable mission systems for airborne platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement deterministic network architectures supporting aviation HWIL/SWIL and System Integration Lab (SIL) environments.
  • Design and maintain deterministic, low-latency, fault-tolerant network architectures utilizing advanced Ethernet technologies.
  • Integrate mission systems with enterprise IT infrastructure, including VMware, Windows Server, Active Directory, Linux, and Cisco networking environments.
  • Perform network performance analysis and validation activities, including latency, jitter, throughput, synchronization, and resiliency assessments.
  • Support HWIL/SWIL/SIL test planning, setup, execution, troubleshooting, and post-test analysis activities.
  • Develop network automation scripts and tooling utilizing Python/PowerShell or similar scripting languages to support configuration management, monitoring, and performance optimization.
  • Support cybersecurity, RMF, STIGs, and Zero Trust initiatives.
  • Mentor junior network administrators and engineers.
  • Collaborate across multidisciplinary engineering teams to support system integration, OSVD events, and platform modernization initiatives.
  • Produce technical documentation, network diagrams, procedures, reports, and engineering artifacts supporting integration and test activities.

  • Possession of an active CCNA certification or equivalent industry-recognized networking certification demonstrating proficiency in routing and switching technologies.
  • Strong experience with Ethernet networking technologies, including switching, routing, VLANs, QoS, and deterministic networking concepts.
  • Experience with network analysis and troubleshooting tools such as Wireshark, SolarWinds, or equivalent platforms.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to produce technical documentation and brief cross-functional teams.
  • Must be willing to travel to technical events and customer locations as needed (estimated 10% per year).
