Job description

Sr. Civil/Structural Designer 

Zachry Engineering Corporation (ZEC) is seeking a talented and self-motivated Sr. Civil/Structural Designer to join our Engineering office in Charlotte, North Carolina. This position provides the opportunity to lead the development of complex industrial and power projects while collaborating with long-standing clients and multidisciplinary engineering teams. 

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in structural steel and reinforced concrete design, including foundations, equipment supports, and industrial structures. This individual will serve as a technical leader for civil/structural design activities, guiding project execution from concept through construction support while mentoring junior designers and supporting multidisciplinary coordination.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Drafting, Design Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related field; equivalent experience will be considered.

  • 15+ years of civil/structural design experience supporting industrial, power generation, energy, manufacturing, chemical, or heavy industrial facilities.

  • Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD and Autodesk structural design software; AVEVA E3D/PDMS experience preferred.

  • Working knowledge of Navisworks, Bluebeam Revu, and Microsoft Office applications.

  • Extensive knowledge of structural steel, reinforced concrete, foundation design, and industrial construction practices.

  • Experience developing and coordinating civil/structural design deliverables for new construction, retrofits, and brownfield projects.

  • Proven ability to independently lead complex design efforts and provide technical direction with minimal supervision.

  • Strong leadership, mentoring, communication, and team collaboration skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and resolve complex design and constructability challenges.

  • Ability to travel occasionally and perform field assignments in industrial environments.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, or a related discipline.

  • Experience with Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) and EPC project execution.

  • Experience with AVEVA E3D/PDMS modeling.

  • Experience leading civil/structural design teams on large industrial, power generation, or energy projects.

Primary Areas of Focus: Structural steel framing, reinforced concrete structures, industrial foundations, equipment supports, retrofit and brownfield projects, multidisciplinary coordination, and technical leadership of civil/structural design teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the designated checker for civil/structural drawings and 3D models-including civil, concrete, structural steel, and architectural deliverables-across multiple projects prior to issuance
  • Ensure compliance with ACI, AISC, IBC, OSHA, client standards, and company SOPs
  • Verify accuracy, constructability, completeness, and consistency of all deliverables
  • Perform comprehensive 3D model reviews, including geometry, connectivity, clash detection, and interdisciplinary coordination
  • Review vendor/shop drawings and construction submittals for alignment with design intent and project requirements
  • Identify, communicate, and help resolve discrepancies, clashes, and potential risks in collaboration with project teams
  • Act as a QA/QC gatekeeper, ensuring all deliverables meet established standards prior to release
  • Develop and review designs for civil systems (grading and drainage), structural steel, concrete, and architectural components in both 2D and 3D environments
  • Mentor junior and mid-level team members, fostering technical development and best practices
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to meet project schedules and deliverables
  • Support project execution through planning, prioritization, and effective field and design coordination
