About the Department: The City of Rocky Mount's Fire Department is ready to respond to emergency calls 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. At any hour of the day, Rocky Mount firefighters can be seen outside any of the City's 7 fire stations cleaning and maintaining the City's investment in emergency apparatus, conducting training exercises, assisting citizens and/or visitors, performing pre-plans, conducting public fire education events, or a number of other activities that enhance the public safety.
The Rocky Mount Fire Department provides fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical services, hazardous materials mitigation, technical rescue, code enforcement, fire investigation, and public education to the city of Rocky Mount. Our mission is to serve the City of Rocky Mount by protecting lives and property through quality and excellence in service. DEFINITION: This position performs firefighting and emergency medical duties in response to fire, medical, and other emergency situations.
REPORTS TO: The Fire Captain assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
FIREFIGHTER /EMT
Candidate must be 18 years of age on date of hire. Candidate must possess a High School Diploma or GED from an accredited school. Candidate must possess a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina.
Candidate must pass a physical agility test, have a visual acuity of 20/100 or better, corrected to 20/20.
Candidates will be subject to a criminal background check upon offer of employment.
Candidate must have the ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission.
Candidate must possess appropriate state EMS certification.
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with representatives of other emergency response agencies, co-workers, and members of the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Perform heavy work with the ability to participate in firefighting and fitness activities; includes the ability to routinely perform walking, running, stooping, kneeling, squatting, crawling, climbing, lifting of fire equipment, pulling of fire hose, manipulation of nozzles, carrying, reaching, and balancing activities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in a fire station and at the scene of emergency incidents. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, occasional cold or inclement weather, and dangerous conditions associated with fire and other emergency scenes. The work requires the use of specialized protective equipment, such as a self-contained breathing apparatus, necessary for the respiratory protection program.
