Project Engineer / Estimator - Life Safety, Security & AV Systems

Position Overview
The Project Engineer / Estimator plays a critical role in pre-construction and project execution by developing accurate, detailed estimates and supporting system design for life safety, security, and AV projects. This position partners closely with Sales, Engineering, and Project Management to ensure project scope, pricing, and profitability align with customer requirements and company goals.
This role is ideal for someone with hands-on experience in systems integration who enjoys estimating, application engineering, and collaborating across teams.
Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct site walks with Sales and Project Management to assess scope, system requirements, and site conditions
  • Develop detailed project estimates, including labor, materials, and system design, while meeting margin targets
  • Assist with application engineering and equipment selection for fire alarm, life safety, security, and AV systems
  • Support pre-sales efforts including proposal development, scope clarification, and customer budget support
  • Collaborate with Project Managers and CAD resources to produce accurate drawings and documentation
  • Prepare and manage project documentation including submittals, change orders, and close-out packages
  • Track project costs and gross margins, working with internal teams to identify risks and cost-saving opportunities
  • Monitor local bid opportunities and recommend projects aligned with company capabilities
  • Work directly with select clients to design solutions and support project execution
  • Stay current on applicable codes, standards, and manufacturer requirements
  • Follow all company and customer safety, compliance, and quality programs
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Electronics, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 2+ years of experience in systems integration, construction, or low-voltage / life safety environments
  • Working knowledge of applicable NFPA and BICSI codes
  • Experience with estimating, system design, and project documentation
  • Familiarity with CAD and drafting concepts
  • Strong financial aptitude with the ability to manage labor, materials, and margins
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel required) and project documentation tools
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments
Preferred Certifications
  • NICET Fire Alarm (Level II-IV)
  • RCDD (or willingness to obtain)
