This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this department. This is not an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities, and LCMC Health reserves the right to amend and change responsibilities to meet organizational needs as necessary.
GENERAL DUTIES

  • Accessions and prioritizes specimens delivered from various departments.
  • Assists with grossing and intraoperative frozen diagnosis when necessary.
  • Prepares specimen for microscopic evaluation, including processing, embedding and microtomy.
  • Performs routine H&E, special stains and immunohistochemical stains.
  • Performs quality control review of all slides and assesses established controls and troubleshoots performance, prior to releasing to pathologist.
  • Operates, maintains and troubleshoots instrumentation utilized to prepare histological and cytological specimens.
  • Prepares all reagents, stains, and solutions required for both routine and complex histological procedures in accordance with standard written procedures.
  • Maintains documentation of all specimens, stain quality and instrumentation quality control.
  • Processes and ship specimens to referral laboratories.
  • Performs the duties of the Autopsy Assistant when required.
  • Participates in the maintenance of adequate inventory of supplies and reagents.
  • Participates in the education of residents, students, and junior staff members.
  • Participates in the CAP (College of American Pathologists) surveys and inspection preparedness.
  • May be asked to perform/supervise more complex procedures within the histology laboratory.
  • Participate in optimization and validation of instrumentation or procedures.
  • Complies with hospital/laboratory safety and infection control additional policies and procedures. Reports safety incidents to the supervisor.
  • Follows Standard Precautions when dealing with blood and body fluids.

    EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Board Certified Histotechnologist experience preferred in Histology/Anatomic Pathology.
