Autonomy information

What are some of the common challenges faced by professionals working in the field of autonomy, such as autonomous systems engineering?

Professionals in the autonomy field often encounter challenges related to integrating complex hardware and software systems, ensuring safety and reliability, and keeping up with rapidly evolving technology. Collaborating across multidisciplinary teams—such as robotics, AI, and systems engineering—is essential to address these challenges effectively. Additionally, testing autonomous solutions in real-world environments to handle unpredictable scenarios is a critical part of the role, requiring strong problem-solving skills and adaptability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Autonomous Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Autonomous Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in robotics, computer science, and control systems, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with programming languages (such as Python or C++), simulation tools (like ROS or Gazebo), and experience with AI or machine learning frameworks are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, and effective teamwork set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for designing, developing, and improving autonomous technologies that function reliably in complex, real-world environments.

What is the difference between Autonomy vs Project Manager?

AspectAutonomyProject Manager
Required credentialsTypically none; skills in decision-making and independenceProject management certifications (PMP, CAPM), relevant experience
Work environmentIndependent, self-directed roles, often in consulting or freelance workTeam-based, coordinating projects within organizations
Employer and industry usageUsed across various industries for roles emphasizing independenceCommon in construction, IT, marketing, and corporate sectors

Autonomy refers to the degree of independence in decision-making and work execution, often in roles that require self-direction. Project Managers focus on planning, executing, and closing projects within organizations, often working within structured teams. While Autonomy emphasizes independence, Project Managers operate within defined project scopes and organizational frameworks.

What are autonomy engineers?

Autonomy engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain autonomous systems, such as self-driving vehicles, drones, or robotics. Their work focuses on enabling machines to perform tasks without constant human intervention by integrating sensors, control algorithms, and artificial intelligence. Autonomy engineers often collaborate with software developers, hardware engineers, and data scientists to ensure the safe and efficient operation of autonomous technologies. Their expertise is crucial in industries like automotive, aerospace, and robotics, where automation and intelligent systems are rapidly advancing.

Job description

This is a project-based employee role supporting the verification, validation, and readiness of our autonomous vehicle platforms. Development phases of this nature typically span through project completion (typically 2–4 years), though scope and duration are driven by business needs.

JOB SUMMARY

The Test Engineer / Planner IV is responsible for defining and executing portfolio-level validation strategies that verify the readiness, reliability, and safety of ASI's autonomous robotic systems. This role leads the development of large-scale testing frameworks that span individual components, integrated subsystems, and full autonomous vehicle platforms.

As a Level IV contributor, this position establishes validation architecture, defines long-term testing strategies, and ensures traceability between system requirements, safety objectives, and test results. The role works closely with cross-functional engineering teams to drive certification readiness, identify system risks, and communicate system performance and readiness to engineering leadership.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Define and lead portfolio-level validation strategies for robotic and autonomous systems
  • Collaborate with program managers, systems engineers, software engineers, and mechatronics teams to understand system concepts of operation and design intent
  • Develop scalable test architectures that support verification across component, subsystem, and full-system integration levels
  • Design and oversee structured test plans, test suites, and data collection strategies for integrated robotic systems
  • Establish instrumentation strategies and testing methodologies that measure performance, reliability, safety, and durability
  • Analyze test data and system performance metrics to identify trends, root causes, and readiness risks
  • Ensure traceability between system requirements, test plans, results, and safety or certification objectives
  • Lead readiness reviews and provide data-driven recommendations on system performance and risk mitigation
  • Establish scalable data analysis methods and reporting standards for validation activities
  • Contribute to the development of automated testing frameworks using tools such as Python or C++
  • Support development of validation environments including hardware-in-the-loop, software-in-the-loop, and simulation-based testing
  • Serve as a technical advisor on system validation strategy, safety compliance, and system readiness

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, JOB SKILLS

  • Bachelor's degree in Robotics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • 10+ years of experience in verification, validation, systems integration, or related engineering roles
  • Demonstrated experience defining large-scale validation strategies and system-level testing frameworks
  • Strong understanding of systems engineering principles, requirements traceability, and development lifecycles
  • Experience designing structured test plans and data collection methodologies for complex systems
  • Proficiency with Python, C++, or similar scripting languages used in test automation
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git
  • Familiarity with requirements and test management tools such as Jira, JAMA, or similar platforms
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to lead cross-functional validation initiatives and communicate technical findings clearly

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in Engineering or a related discipline
  • Experience working with robotics or autonomous vehicle systems
  • Familiarity with ROS or ROS2 frameworks
  • Experience with HIL/SIL testing systems and simulation tools such as Gazebo
  • Understanding of embedded systems and communication protocols such as CAN, I2C, or SPI
  • Experience working within functional safety or regulated engineering environments

BENEFITS

ASI offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • 401k with employer match
  • Generous HSA contribution
  • PTO, Paid Holidays, and Flextime
  • ASI covers 90% of employee medical plan costs
