What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Autonomous Vehicle Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Autonomous Vehicle Engineer, you need solid expertise in robotics, computer vision, machine learning, and a background in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with programming languages like Python and C++, as well as experience with ROS (Robot Operating System) and simulation tools, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork set standout professionals apart. These abilities are crucial for developing safe, reliable autonomous systems that perform well in complex, real-world environments.

How does an Autonomous Systems Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Autonomous Systems Engineers work closely with software developers, hardware engineers, data scientists, and project managers to design, test, and deploy autonomous technologies. Collaboration often involves regular team meetings, sharing technical documentation, and joint problem-solving sessions to ensure seamless integration of system components. Engineers may also coordinate with testing teams to validate system performance and safety, making effective communication and teamwork essential skills in this role.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

In the field of autonomous systems, roles such as autonomous vehicle software engineers or robotics specialists can earn $10,000 or more per month, especially with experience and specialized skills in programming, AI, and sensor integration. These positions often require expertise in coding languages like Python or C++, knowledge of machine learning, and familiarity with autonomous technology platforms.

What are autonomous jobs?

Autonomous jobs refer to roles or tasks that are performed independently, often with minimal supervision or direction. In the context of technology, autonomous jobs usually involve the use of artificial intelligence or robotics to carry out work without constant human intervention. These positions might include operating or overseeing autonomous vehicles, managing automated systems, or developing technologies that support automation. The goal is to improve efficiency, safety, and productivity by reducing the need for manual oversight. Careers in this field can span across industries such as transportation, manufacturing, logistics, and IT.

What jobs have a lot of autonomy?

Jobs with high autonomy include roles such as autonomous vehicle operators, freelance writers, software developers, and remote consultants. These positions often allow individuals to set their own schedules, work independently, and make decisions with minimal supervision. Skills in self-management, technical tools, and specialized knowledge are typically important in these roles.

Which 3 jobs will survive AI?

Jobs that require complex human interaction, creativity, and critical thinking, such as healthcare professionals, skilled tradespeople, and creative roles like writers and designers, are more likely to persist despite AI advancements. These roles often involve emotional intelligence, nuanced judgment, and hands-on skills that AI cannot easily replicate.

What does autonomous job mean?

An autonomous job refers to a role where employees have a high degree of independence in their tasks, often requiring self-management and decision-making. These positions may involve working with automation tools or in environments that emphasize flexibility and minimal supervision.

Job description

About the Role

The Motion Planning team at a leading OEM is scaling its Pick Up / Drop Off (PUDO) and Depot Site enablement capabilities while expanding into new operational domains. In this contract role, you will work closely with Motion Planning engineers to accelerate development, testing, and validation workflows.

You will own the creation of simulation scenarios, manage vehicle testing activities, and serve as the first line of triage for test results. This is a unique opportunity to contribute directly to autonomous vehicle development while building deep, hands-on robotics and autonomy expertise.

We are looking for someone who is organized, technically curious, and eager to learn. You will gain exposure to simulation infrastructure, onโ€‘vehicle testing processes, and the realโ€‘world challenges of deploying autonomous systems at scale. If you are passionate about selfโ€‘driving technology and want to make a tangible impact, we would love to hear from you.

Responsibilities

Create and specify simulation scenarios for PUDO and Depot site use cases, translating operational requirements into testable configurations.

Develop and maintain vehicle test plans, supporting both onโ€‘site and offโ€‘site testing to ensure comprehensive coverage of new siteโ€‘enablement features.

Manage test scheduling and coordination, working closely with vehicle operations teams to maximize testing efficiency.

Perform firstโ€‘pass triage of simulation and vehicle test results, identifying issues and categorizing them for engineering review and resolution.

Document test findings and identify opportunities to streamline test and validation processes.

Create clear reports that help autonomy engineers quickly understand test outcomes, risks, and regressions.

Qualifications

Bachelorโ€™s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related technical field

(or equivalent practical experience)

Ability and willingness to travel for test support

Familiarity with scripting languages, preferably Python, for automation and data analysis

Strong organizational skills, with experience managing schedules or coordinating technical workflows

Ability to learn new tools and systems quickly

Clear written and verbal communication skills for documenting findings and collaborating with engineers

Bonus Qualifications

Experience working with simulation environments or game engines

Exposure to robotics, automotive systems, or autonomous vehicles

Familiarity with version control systems (Git) and issue tracking tools (JIRA or similar)

Experience in test engineering, QA, verification, or validation

Understanding of basic vehicle dynamics or motion planning concepts

Additional Details

Engineering Levels: L1 โ€“ L3

Number of Openings: 5

Work Location: Onsite (Bay Area, Austin, or Miami)

Contract Duration: ~10 months (anticipated Marchโ€“December, starting ASAP)
