What does an autonomous vehicle test engineer do?

An Autonomous Vehicle Test Engineer is responsible for designing, executing, and analyzing tests on self-driving vehicles and their systems. They work with various sensors, software, and hardware to ensure that autonomous vehicles operate safely and efficiently under different conditions. Their duties include developing test plans, running simulations, collecting and interpreting data, and reporting results to improve vehicle performance. They also collaborate with software developers, safety engineers, and other specialists to troubleshoot issues and validate new features. This role is critical to advancing the reliability and safety of autonomous driving technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an autonomous vehicle test engineer?

To thrive as an Autonomous Vehicle Test Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, robotics, and computer science, often backed by a degree in electrical, mechanical, or software engineering. Familiarity with simulation tools, data logging systems, and industry-standard programming languages like Python or C++ is essential, along with certifications in safety protocols such as ISO 26262. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top candidates apart. These competencies ensure the safe, accurate, and efficient testing of autonomous systems in real-world and simulated environments.

What are some typical challenges autonomous vehicle test engineers face when working with new software updates?

Autonomous Vehicle Test Engineers often face challenges when integrating and validating new software updates, as these updates can introduce unforeseen bugs or compatibility issues with existing vehicle hardware. Ensuring the safety and reliability of the system requires thorough testing in both simulated environments and real-world scenarios. Engineers must also collaborate closely with software developers and safety teams to quickly identify, document, and resolve any issues. Managing tight deadlines while maintaining rigorous testing standards is a common aspect of the role.

What is the difference between Autonomous Vehicle Test Engineer vs Autonomous Vehicle Software Developer?

AspectAutonomous Vehicle Test EngineerAutonomous Vehicle Software Developer
Primary RoleDesigning and executing tests to validate autonomous vehicle systemsDeveloping and coding software for autonomous vehicle functions
Skills & CertificationsKnowledge of testing protocols, sensor systems, and safety standardsProficiency in programming languages, algorithms, and software engineering
Work EnvironmentTesting labs, vehicle testing sites, simulation environmentsSoftware development teams, coding environments, simulation platforms
Industry UsageUsed by automotive manufacturers and testing labs for validationUsed by software companies and automotive OEMs for system development

While both roles are integral to autonomous vehicle development, the Autonomous Vehicle Test Engineer focuses on validating and testing vehicle systems, ensuring safety and performance. In contrast, the Autonomous Vehicle Software Developer concentrates on creating the software that powers autonomous functions. Both roles require technical expertise but differ in daily tasks and focus areas.

Job description

Who we are

Gatik, the leader in autonomous middle-mile logistics, is revolutionizing the B2B supply chain with its autonomous transportation-as-a-service (ATaaS) solution and prioritizing safe, consistent deliveries while streamlining freight movement by reducing congestion. The company focuses on short-haul, B2B logistics for Fortune 500 retailers and in 2021 launched the world's first fully driverless commercial transportation service with Walmart. Gatik's Class 3-7 autonomous trucks are commercially deployed across major markets, including Texas, Arkansas, and Ontario, Canada, driving innovation in freight transportation.

The company's proprietary Level 4 autonomous technology, Gatik Carrier, is custom-built to transport freight safely and efficiently between pick-up and drop-off locations on the middle mile. With robust capabilities in both highway and urban environments, Gatik Carrier serves as an all-encompassing solution that integrates advanced software and hardware powering the fleet, facilitating effortless integration into customers' logistics operations.

About the role

Join Gatik in Denison, TX and help support the future of autonomous trucking. In this role, you will operate CDL or box trucks while working alongside advanced vehicle technology that powers Gatik's middle-mile logistics network.

We're looking for experienced, safety-focused drivers who are comfortable with new technology and excited to be part of the next generation of freight transportation.

What You'll Do

  • Drive & Test: Safely operate 26-30 ft box trucks, monitor diagnostic screens, and execute test runs.
  • Maintain Vehicle Standards: Proactively manage vehicle upkeep, coordinate vendor repairs, and ensure no truck returns to service with unresolved defects.
  • Rigorous DVIRs: Complete accurate pre- and post-trip Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs) to catch and document issues before hit the road.
  • Engineering Feedback: Record software and hardware behavior clearly to help refine autonomous technology.
  • Proactive Ownership: Escalate risks early, follow through on maintenance requests, and take full responsibility for vehicle readiness.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience: 3+ years of professional driving experience, including 1+ year in 26-30 ft box trucks (Required).
  • Licensing: Valid CDL and clean Motor Vehicle Record (Required).
  • Safety & Ownership Mindset: Commitment to prioritizing safety and fleet integrity over speed.
  • Tech Proficiency: Comfortable with Samsara ELD, timecard tools, Slack, email, and diagnostic apps.
  • Communication: Clear report writing, precise DVIR record-keeping, and strong vendor communication skills.
  • Physical Ability: Able to mount/dismount trucks using three points of contact and react quickly in tight seating spaces.
  • Requirements: Variable/rotating shift availability; must pass background check and drug screening; open to working through agency partners.

Why You'll Love Working With Us

  • Local routes - home daily
  • Weekly pay
  • Competitive wages
  • Solid benefits package
  • Unlimited opportunities for growth
  • Drive at the forefront of autonomous trucking.

More about Gatik

Founded in 2017 by experts in autonomous vehicle technology, Gatik has rapidly expanded its presence to Mountain View, Dallas-Fort Worth, Arkansas, and Toronto. As the first and only company to achieve fully driverless middle-mile commercial deliveries, Gatik holds a unique and defensible position in the AV industry, with a clear trajectory toward sustainable growth and profitability.

We have delivered complete, proprietary AV technology - an integration of software and hardware - to enable earlier successes for our clients in constrained Level 4 autonomy.  By choosing the middle mile - with defined point-to-point delivery, we have simplified some of the more complex AV challenges, enabling us to achieve full autonomy ahead of competitors. Given extensive knowledge of Gatik's well-defined, fixed route ODDs and hybrid architecture, we are able to hyper-optimize our models with exponentially less data, establish gate-keeping mechanisms to maintain explainability, and ensure continued safety of the system for unmanned operations.
