How much do autonomous systems engineer jobs pay per year?
What does an autonomous systems engineer do?
An Autonomous Systems Engineer designs, develops, and optimizes self-governing systems that operate with minimal human intervention. This includes robotics, self-driving vehicles, drones, and AI-driven automation. They work with sensors, machine learning, control systems, and software to ensure reliable decision-making and adaptability in dynamic environments. Their role often involves testing, simulation, and integration of hardware and software components to improve system efficiency and safety.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an autonomous systems engineer?
To thrive as an Autonomous Systems Engineer, you need strong expertise in robotics, control systems, sensor integration, and proficiency in languages such as Python or C++, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools like ROS (Robot Operating System), MATLAB/Simulink, and experience deploying algorithms on embedded hardware are typically required. Effective problem-solving, strong teamwork, and clear communication are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies are crucial for designing reliable autonomous solutions, troubleshooting complex issues, and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams for successful system deployment.
What are some common challenges faced by autonomous systems engineers and how are they addressed?
Autonomous Systems Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating diverse hardware and software components, achieving robust sensor fusion, and ensuring system reliability in unpredictable environments. Addressing these challenges typically involves rigorous simulation testing, iterative algorithm development, and close collaboration with cross-functional teams in software, hardware, and systems engineering. Engineers must also stay updated with advancements in machine learning and robotics to continually refine and enhance system capabilities. Employers support these efforts through ongoing training, collaborative problem-solving sessions, and investment in advanced prototyping resources.

Job description
APS is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to support the development of advanced U.S. Navy undersea systems from concept through production and qualification. The successful candidate will lead systems engineering efforts for clean-sheet hardware developments, translating customer and engineering requirements into well-defined subsystem and component requirements while supporting verification, validation, integration, and Navy qualification activities.
The ideal candidate brings a strong technical foundation, enjoys working across multidisciplinary teams to develop complex mechanical, electrical, and software-based systems for maritime applications, and proven ability to support schedule and coordinate resources to meet system definition and test milestones while providing engineering rigor to deconflict subsystem interactions during rapid development, test, and production cycles. APS works on exciting, technically challenging, research & development programs where multidisciplinary teams work closely to address difficult national security needs. This role offers the opportunity to shape next-generation undersea capabilities by leading systems engineering activities from initial customer requirements through successful Navy qualification and deployment. At APS you will work in a small company environment where technical and administrative excellence are rewarded, and an entrepreneurial spirit is encouraged. This position will allow applicants to make meaningful contributions to the APS mission.
Job Functions and Responsibilities:
- Analyze and interpret U.S. Navy requirements, specifications, and interface documents.
- Able to coordinate multiple stakeholders and engineering disciplines.
- Develop and manage system, subsystem, and component-level requirements using a structured systems engineering approach.
- Create and maintain requirements traceability from customer requirements through verification and validation.
- Lead requirements decomposition and allocation across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Support system architecture development and trade studies during early design phases.
- Develop Interface Control Documents (ICDs), system specifications, verification plans, and technical data packages.
- Coordinate system integration activities between mechanical, electrical, software, manufacturing, and test engineering teams.
- Develop qualification and verification strategies consistent with Navy acquisition programs.
- Track system maturity through design reviews including SRR, SFR, PDR, CDR, TRR, and qualification testing.
- Support hardware integration, laboratory testing, environmental testing, and qualification efforts.
- Participate in customer technical interchange meetings and design reviews.
- Assist with technical risk identification, mitigation planning, and issue resolution throughout the program lifecycle.
- Willing to travel occasionally in support of customer meetings, integration events, and qualification testing.
- Support transition from development into production.
- Outline and track metrics for design margin versus system maturity status to manage program risks
-
- Education:
- B.S. degree in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or a related technical discipline
- Minimum of 5 years of systems engineering experience supporting development of complex engineered products.
- Demonstrated experience supporting new product development or clean-sheet system design from concept through testing.
- Experience developing and managing system and subsystem requirements.
- Experience with technical risk identification, tracking, and mitigation activity planning including maintaining risk registers/waterfalls and status updates
- Familiarity with requirements decomposition, verification, and validation methodologies.
- Experience supporting design reviews throughout the product lifecycle.
- Ability to work across multidisciplinary engineering organizations.
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- U.S. Citizenship.
- Education:
- Advanced degree (M.S. or M. Eng.) in Systems Engineering or a related technical discipline with 5+ years of relevant experience
- Experience supporting U.S. Navy acquisition or defense development programs.
- Experience developing underwater, maritime, autonomous, or subsea systems.
- Experience working in cross-functional groups that include software developers, scientists, engineers, and mathematicians
- Experience supporting Configuration Management and change control processes.
- Experience using requirements management tools such as:
- IBM DOORS or DOORS Next
- Cameo Systems Modeler (MagicDraw)
- Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles.
- Experience supporting Navy qualification testing or military environmental qualification.
- Self-motivated and comfortable working in ambiguous, early-stage development efforts.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable engaging directly with Navy customers and technical representatives.
