Automotive User Experience Design information

What is automotive user experience design?

Automotive User Experience (UX) Design is the process of creating intuitive, enjoyable, and effective interactions between people and vehicles. This field focuses on designing digital interfaces like touchscreens, instrument clusters, and infotainment systems, as well as overall in-car experiences, to ensure safety, usability, and satisfaction for drivers and passengers. UX designers in the automotive industry combine knowledge of human behavior, technology, and automotive trends to develop solutions that enhance comfort, convenience, and engagement. Their work is crucial in adapting vehicles to new technologies, such as electric and autonomous cars.

What are some of the unique challenges faced by automotive user experience designers when working on in-vehicle interfaces?

Automotive User Experience Designers must balance safety regulations, driver distraction concerns, and technological innovation when creating in-vehicle interfaces. Unlike traditional digital design roles, they work closely with engineers, product managers, and sometimes regulatory bodies to ensure that designs are intuitive without compromising safety. Designers often conduct user testing in real or simulated driving environments to validate their concepts. Collaboration across disciplines is essential, as is staying updated on emerging automotive technologies and evolving customer expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automotive user experience designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automotive User Experience Designer, you need expertise in user-centered design, interaction design, and a background in automotive engineering or industrial design. Familiarity with design software like Sketch, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and prototyping tools, as well as knowledge of HMI systems and automotive UX standards, is typically required. Strong collaboration, creative problem-solving, and excellent communication skills help designers translate complex requirements into intuitive in-vehicle experiences. These skills ensure that automotive interfaces are safe, innovative, and user-friendly, enhancing driver satisfaction and brand competitiveness.

What is the difference between Automotive User Experience Design vs Automotive UI Designer?

Job description

At eBay, we're more than a global ecommerce leader - we're changing the way the world shops and sells. Our platform empowers millions of buyers and sellers in more than 190 markets around the world. We're committed to pushing boundaries and leaving our mark as we reinvent the future of ecommerce for enthusiasts.

Our customers are our compass, authenticity thrives, bold ideas are welcome, and everyone can bring their unique selves to work - every day. We're in this together, sustaining the future of our customers, our company, and our planet.

Join a team of passionate thinkers, innovators, and dreamers - and help us connect people and build communities to create economic opportunity for all.

About the team and the role:

An eBay subsidiary, TCGplayer is on a quest to be the most trusted trading card game (TCG) platform - connecting and empowering the hobby community. Trading card games are a $25B global market that creates community connection through in-person games (Pokemon; Magic: The Gathering; YuGiOh; etc.). Founded by TCG enthusiasts, we operate a global marketplace, and create tools, technologies and solutions that help small businesses profitably sell TCGs at scale.

As a Principal Product Designer, Design Systems, you will shape the future of TCGplayer's product experience by evolving the shared design system that powers our end-to-end commerce ecosystem-from marketplace experiences and seller tools to fulfillment and robotic inventory digitization systems. You will establish and continuously elevate the visual language, interaction patterns, and experience standards that define our products, helping transform them into cohesive, intuitive, and professional-grade experiences that reflect the quality of an eBay company. Working at the intersection of design, engineering, and technology, you will create the shared foundation that enables teams to deliver exceptional user experiences with greater speed, consistency, and quality while advancing AI-assisted design and development through modern design systems, design tokens, and code-connected workflows.

Our User Experience Design team prides itself on creating a culture that fosters camaraderie, embraces diversity, and exudes passion. We value curiosity, craft, and a desire to directly interact with the real world. You don't have to be a hobbyist or gamer to love working in TCGplayer's UX Design organization, but you should be eager to amplify our steadfast commitment to making hobbies and games accessible, fun, and rewarding for everyone. If you're equal parts "empathy" and "ambition," this is an opportunity to take risks and stretch yourself, surrounded by teammates who will support you along the way.

What you will accomplish:

  • Own and evolve TCGplayer's design system across our commerce ecosystem, establishing the visual language, interaction patterns, and reusable components that power consistent, high-quality products.

  • Partner closely with Design and Engineering to ensure the design system is implemented consistently across both Figma and code, improving quality, maintainability, and development efficiency.

  • Define and maintain design standards, governance, documentation, and contribution models that enable the system to scale as the organization grows.

  • Advance our design tooling by developing and maintaining component libraries, design tokens, variables, and workflows that improve designer productivity and implementation fidelity.

  • Raise the quality bar across the organization by evolving our visual language, accessibility standards, and UX patterns based on a deep understanding of our customers' unique needs.

  • Partner with UX Design and Product teams on strategic roadmap initiatives, design sprints, and vision work to define new interaction patterns and experience frameworks that solve emerging customer needs and evolve the design system through practical application in shipped products.

  • Champion modern design and development workflows, including AI-assisted design and design-to-code capabilities, ensuring our design system is prepared for the future of product development.

What you will bring:

  • 8+ years of experience in Product, UX, Visual, or Experience Design, including significant experience designing and evolving enterprise-scale design systems for complex digital products.

  • Demonstrated expertise in design systems architecture, including component libraries, design tokens, variables, interaction patterns, documentation, governance, and scalable contribution models.

  • Exceptional visual and interaction design skills with a portfolio that demonstrates the ability to create elegant, intuitive, and highly polished product experiences while translating them into reusable system assets.

  • Familiarity with emerging AI-assisted design and design-to-code workflows, and a strong interest in shaping how design systems enable the future of product development.

  • Experience designing for desktop, responsive web, and native mobile experiences, with the ability to create scalable patterns that work cohesively across platforms.

  • Deep understanding of how design systems are implemented in code, with experience partnering closely with Engineering to ensure consistency between design and production through shared components, tokens, and front-end technologies.

  • Ability to define and evolve design languages, interaction models, and UX standards that improve product quality, consistency, accessibility, and efficiency across multiple products and teams.

  • Experience establishing new interaction patterns and translating innovations from product work into scalable design system capabilities that can be adopted across an organization.

  • Strong systems thinking and the ability to balance immediate product needs with long-term platform health, maintainability, and scalability.

  • Experience with modern design tooling including Figma component libraries, variables, design tokens, and prototyping, with a passion for improving how designers and engineers work together.

  • Outstanding communication and facilitation skills, with a proven track record of building alignment across Design, Product, and Engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in eCommerce, marketplaces, seller tools, SaaS, fintech, or other complex product ecosystems

  • Demonstrated experience implementing AI-assisted design and development workflows, including integrating design systems with AI-powered prototyping, design generation, and design-to-code pipelines

  • Familiarity with the gaming, hobby, or collectibles community - particularly trading card games
