What is an automotive service advisor?

An Automotive Service Advisor is employed by a car dealership or service center to communicate with customers regarding their repair and maintenance issues. They then liaise with the Mechanics or Auto Technicians who make the repairs. As an Automotive Service Advisor, your responsibilities and duties include greeting customers, understanding their needs, communicating those to service providers, working with insurance companies when needed, and ensuring the customer understands the repair or maintenance options they have. Some jobs also require their service advisors to have technician or sales experience so that they can fulfill multiple roles in the company.

What does an automotive service advisor do?

An Automotive Service Advisor acts as the main point of contact between customers and the service department at an auto repair shop or dealership. They listen to customers’ concerns about their vehicles, recommend necessary services or repairs, and communicate with technicians to ensure the work is completed efficiently. Service Advisors also provide cost estimates, explain repair details, and help ensure customer satisfaction throughout the service process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automotive service advisor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automotive Service Advisor, you need a solid understanding of automotive systems, strong customer service abilities, and often a high school diploma or postsecondary automotive training. These skills are vital for ensuring customer satisfaction, accurate service recommendations, and efficient workflow in automotive service environments.

What are some common challenges automotive service advisors face when balancing customer expectations and repair timelines?

Automotive Service Advisors often face the challenge of managing customer expectations when repairs take longer than anticipated due to parts availability or complex diagnostics. Clear and proactive communication with both customers and the technician team is essential to keep everyone informed and satisfied. Advisors must also manage a high volume of service requests, prioritize urgent repairs, and maintain accurate documentation, all while delivering excellent customer service. Building strong relationships with both customers and technicians can help streamline the process and minimize misunderstandings.

Midas Dublin is one of the highest-volume shops in the region, and we're looking for a Service Advisor who wants to grow into a long-term career, not just fill a shift. You'll be the face of the shop: the first person our customers meet and the person they trust to tell them the truth about their vehicle.
We believe the best advisors aren't the loudest closers - they're the most trusted ones. You'll greet customers, listen to what's actually bothering them, translate what our technicians find into something they can understand, and guide them to a confident decision about the work their vehicle needs. Done right, that's not "selling." It's earning the kind of trust that brings customers back and has them asking for you by name.
What You'll Do
  • Greet customers and run a thorough intake - really listening, not just writing up a ticket
  • Present technician findings clearly, using photos, inspection results, and plain language so the "why" behind every recommendation is obvious
  • Provide accurate written estimates and follow up on every open quote to close the work
  • Coordinate timelines between customers and the shop, setting clear expectations
  • Recover declined and deferred work through thoughtful, no-pressure follow-up

What We're Looking For
• A strong communicator - confident recommending services and comfortable asking for the sale
• Excellent and people skills, with a natural ability to earn trust quickly
• A track record of meeting sales goals or growing ticket value is a major plus
• Previous experience as a service advisor, in customer-facing sales, or in the auto industry
preferred
What We Offer
• Competitive pay: Based on Experience] plus commission on sales
• [Performance bonus - strong earning potential for top performers]
• [Health / dental / vision benefits]
• [Paid time off and holidays]
• Steady, year-round work in a busy shop
• A supportive team and clear opportunities to advance
Compensation: $28.00 - $40.00 per hour
