What is automotive recon?

Automotive recon, short for reconditioning, refers to the process of inspecting, repairing, cleaning, and preparing used vehicles for resale, typically at a dealership. This process can include mechanical repairs, cosmetic fixes, detailing, and quality inspections to ensure the vehicle meets safety and appearance standards. Automotive recon helps maximize a vehicle’s resale value and ensures customer satisfaction by presenting used cars in their best possible condition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automotive recon?

These competencies ensure vehicles are restored efficiently to high standards, directly impacting customer satisfaction and dealership profitability.

What are the most common challenges faced in an automotive recon role and how can I prepare for them?

Automotive Recon professionals often face challenges such as meeting tight turnaround times, balancing quality standards with speed, and adapting to constantly changing vehicle conditions. As a leading multi-location automotive retailer serving the DC and Baltimore metro areas, we take pride in delivering retail-ready vehicles quickly and efficiently while maintaining the highest quality standards.

The PDR Technician plays a critical role in our reconditioning process by removing dents and minor body damage without disturbing the vehicle’s factory paint. As a Paintless Dent Repair Technician, you will:

Perform Paintless Dent Repairs:
Repair door dings, creases, hail damage, and minor body dents using specialized PDR tools while preserving factory paint.

Assess Vehicle Damage:
Inspect incoming vehicles during the reconditioning process and determine whether dents can be repaired using PDR or require conventional body repair.

Support Recon Workflow:
Work closely with the recon manager, body shop team, and detail department to ensure vehicles move efficiently through the reconditioning process.

Quality Control:
Inspect repaired panels under proper lighting to ensure the highest quality finish with no visible distortion or imperfections.

Maintain Tools & Equipment:
Safely operate and maintain PDR tools including rods, glue pull systems, tap-down tools, and specialized lighting.

Focus on vehicles closest to retail-ready status to support efficient recon turnaround times.

Communicate with Management:
Provide repair assessments and timelines to recon leadership to support effective inventory management.

Be a Team Player: Collaborate effectively with recon, body shop, and detailing teams.
