Job description


SSA Marine is a Seattle-based global operator of marine terminals and stevedoring services, specializing in the movement and handling of cargo across major ports worldwide. As part of Carrix, the company manages container, bulk, and breakbulk operations, as well as intermodal and rail logistics that connect port activity to inland transportation networks. SSA Marine supports the efficient flow of goods across global supply chains, working with shipping lines, ports, and logistics partners to move a wide range of cargo, including containers, automobiles, and industrial materials.



Location: 1131 SW Klickitat Way, Seattle, WA

Hybrid role: Consists of a combination of WFH and onsite work

Salary range: $125,000-165,000 per year



The Project Manager with our Engineering department is responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering a portfolio of projects of varying scope and complexity across the organization. These may include, but are not limited to, infrastructure upgrades, equipment manufacturing and modernization projects; electrification and decarbonization projects aligned with the organization's ESG goals; safety and compliance initiatives; and automation projects.

Reporting to the Director of Civil Engineering & Projects, the Project Manager provides leadership and oversight from concept development through execution, commissioning, and handover, ensuring that projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and in compliance with SSA's policies, standards, and strategic objectives.


Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead assigned projects from initiation through closeout, including scope definition, budget and schedule development, risk assessment, and resource planning.
  • Prepare and maintain project execution plans and schedules for each project, ensuring alignment with SSA's CAPEX stage-gate process.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders (Engineering, Operations, Procurement, HSE, Legal, Finance) and external partners (contractors, suppliers, port authorities, regulators) to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Ensure that project deliverables comply with technical, safety, environmental, and quality industry standards.
  • Drive the standardization and the rationalization of the global portfolio of the Engineering department, Automation and Infrastructure proposals, ensuring strong alignment with Carrix standards.
  • Manage project reporting, forecasting, and cost control to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery.
  • Support the preparation of RFPs, bid evaluations, and contract awards for assigned projects.
  • Manage outsourced vendors/contractors, define and own the project governance, governance of contract for services, monitor service level agreement performance of vendor; develop action plans for any corrections & course changes.
  • Administer and monitor vendor and contractor performance against scope, schedule, cost, and safety obligations.
  • Manage change orders, claims, and risk mitigation for assigned projects.
  • Integrate the organization's sustainability objectives into project scopes, especially for electrification, emissions reduction, and safety improvements.
  • Engage with internal teams and external agencies to secure required permits and approvals.
  • Communicate project progress and impacts to internal stakeholders, terminal leadership, and external partners as required.
  • Oversee the engineering design and specification process for infrastructure and equipment projects.
  • Coordinate technical reviews, HAZIDs/HAZOPs, and design approvals with appropriate discipline leads.
  • Support operational readiness and handover to terminal operations teams, including training and documentation.
  • Identify and manage project risks, maintaining a live risk register and mitigation plans.
  • Ensure adherence to SSA's safety, environmental, and quality policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Escalate major risks or deviations promptly to the Director of Civil Engineering & Projects.
  • Capture lessons learned from each project and contribute to improving the Company's project delivery framework.
  • Support the development of standard specifications, templates, and best practices within the Central Engineering Department.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field; Project Management certification preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant experience as a Project Delivery Manager or Project Commissioning Manager, with proven success leading large multi-million-dollar CAPEX and expansion projects.
  • Background in transportation or shipping industry strongly preferred.
  • Active PMP or PRINCE2 certification preferred.
  • Experience in operations, infrastructure, and technology, with a focus on large, multiyear projects in industrial infrastructure, equipment, and automation technology.
  • Strong understanding of project financials, including financial planning, cost control, budgeting, and total cost of ownership (TCO).
  • Proficiency with project management tools.


Work Environment:

  • Required job duties are normally performed in a climate-controlled office environment but will require travel to various sites.
  • Exposure to computer screens.
  • The ability to work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast-moving equipment.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Will travel to project sites and multiple regions, as well as attend required meetings as necessary, including extended off-site stays when required.
