Automotive Performance Shop information

What is an automotive performance shop?

An automotive performance shop is a specialized garage or facility that focuses on modifying and enhancing vehicles to improve their speed, power, handling, and overall performance. These shops offer a range of services such as engine tuning, suspension upgrades, exhaust system installations, and custom modifications. Customers often bring their cars to performance shops to achieve better results for racing, show, or personal driving preferences. Technicians in these shops have expertise in high-performance parts and the latest automotive technologies. Whether you want more horsepower or a customized look, performance shops cater to enthusiasts looking to get the most out of their vehicles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an automotive performance shop, and why are they important?

To excel in an Automotive Performance Shop, you need strong mechanical aptitude, diagnostic skills, and a background in automotive technology—often supported by ASE certification or formal training. Familiarity with performance tuning software, diagnostic scanners, and specialized tools is essential for upgrading and troubleshooting high-performance vehicles. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective customer communication are critical soft skills in this environment. These competencies ensure precise, safe modifications and foster customer trust in a competitive automotive market.

What are some common challenges faced by technicians working in an automotive performance shop, and how can they be addressed?

Technicians in an automotive performance shop often encounter challenges such as diagnosing complex issues in high-performance vehicles and staying current with rapidly evolving automotive technologies. These roles can also involve working under tight deadlines, especially when preparing vehicles for races or customer events. To address these challenges, strong diagnostic skills, ongoing training, and effective teamwork are essential. Open communication within the team and a willingness to continually learn help ensure technicians deliver top-quality results while maintaining safety and efficiency.

Job description

Engine Swap & Performance Parts Specialist

Do you know your way around engines or engine swaps? Do you enjoy helping people solve automotive problems?

We are looking for an Engine Swap & Performance Parts Specialist who understands performance vehicles, engine swaps, and aftermarket automotive parts. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys talking with customers, solving problems, and helping enthusiasts get the right parts for their project the first time.

Our customers range from weekend builders and DIY enthusiasts to resto-mod/restoration shops. You'll be helping them select parts, troubleshoot problems, and put together complete Coyote engine swap solutions.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Advise and sell automotive performance and engine swap parts to retail, builder and wholesale customers.
  • Specialize in Ford engine swap applications, including 5.0L, 5.2L, 7.3L and related applications.
  • Help customers diagnose problems with their projects and determine what parts or solutions they need.
  • Assist customers with engine swap compatibility, installation, wiring, accessory drive, fuel, cooling, exhaust, and related systems.
  • Recommend the correct parts based on the customer's vehicle, engine, transmission, application, and intended use.
  • Help customers troubleshoot issues before and during installation.
  • Answer questions by phone, email, online, and in person.
  • Build complete parts packages for customers rather than simply selling individual components.
  • Develop long-term relationships with customers and resto-mod/restoration shops.
  • Follow up with customers to make sure their projects are progressing successfully.
  • Stay current on new products, Coyote engine technology, swap applications, and performance trends.
  • Maintain accurate product knowledge and help keep the sales area organized and professional.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

The ideal candidate has:

  • Strong knowledge of automotive parts and performance applications.
  • Hands-on experience with engines and engine swaps
  • The ability to diagnose automotive problems and think through possible solutions.
  • Experience with aftermarket automotive parts, performance builds, or automotive repair.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • The ability to explain technical information in a way customers can understand.
  • A strong attention to detail when determining part compatibility.
  • A positive, professional, and helpful attitude.
  • The ability to work independently while also being a strong team player.
  • A passion for cars, trucks, performance, and helping people build their projects.

Automotive parts sales experience is a plus, but hands-on automotive experience and strong technical knowledge are equally valuable.

THIS IS MORE THAN A PARTS SALES JOB

Our customers aren't just buying a part — they're creating something exciting and unique.

You will be the person they call when they aren't sure what they need, when something doesn't fit, or when they can't figure out why something isn't working.

If you can look at a customer's setup, ask the right questions, identify the problem, and recommend the right solution, we want to talk to you.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Competitive pay
  • Employee discounts
  • Paid time off
  • Benefits for eligible full-time employees
  • A fast-paced automotive environment
  • The opportunity to work with performance enthusiasts and professional builders
  • An opportunity to grow your knowledge and career in the automotive performance industry

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

You don't have to be a career salesman.

If you're the person your friends call when they have an automotive problem...

If you know the difference between a part that looks like it will work and one that actually works...

If you understand engine swaps...

If you enjoy helping people solve problems...

We want to hear from you.
