Position Overview

Responsibilities & Qualifications

The Novelis North America Bay Minette Technical team is looking for a Product Performance Engineer to be located at our new facility in Bay Minette, Alabama. This role will support the qualification and ongoing customer support of aluminum beverage can and automotive sheet products manufactured at the Bay Minette facility. The role serves as a critical bridge between manufacturing, commercial, and technical service teams to ensure new products are successfully qualified, transitioned into production, and consistently meet customer expectations. The successful candidate will work directly with Bay Minette's Product, Process Engineering and Commercial Technical Services to coordinate qualification programs, provide technical support, resolve customer issues, and ensure Bay Minette products perform successfully throughout their lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Be a role model for safety; demonstrating behaviors that align with the Novelis Safety Absolutes and Safety Principles to build a zero-injury culture.
  • Partner closely with Commercial Managers and Technical Service team to support customer qualification activities for new Beverage/Packaging products produced at Bay Minette.
  • Act as the Voice of the Customer (VOC) champion for Bay Minette, coordinating the communication of customer requirements, qualification feedback, product performance results, and emerging market needs to support successful product commercialization and continuous improvement throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Coordinate, at the plant level, the transition of newly qualified products into commercial manufacturing.
  • Monitor product and process data including mechanical properties, earing, gauge control, flatness, surface quality, formability, and coating.
  • Evaluate can manufacturing process performance against customer specifications, critical output variables and Bay Minette's plant operational metrics.
  • Promptly respond to customer, commercial team, and technical service inquiries regarding current product capabilities, manufacturing histories, and product/process performance.
  • Provide technical support during customer issue investigations and quality incidents.
  • Coordinate metallurgical, quality, and statistical analyses required to assess product performance and issue resolution.
  • Lead root cause investigations related to product performance concerns.
  • Coordinate corrective and preventive actions with Product Development, Operations, Quality, and Technical Service teams.
  • Adhere to and support company quality, environmental, health & safety, and certification standards, including ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, IATF 16949:2016, and ASI Certifications, where applicable.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, chemical or materials engineering.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in aluminum sheet manufacturing or beverage can-making operation roles.
  • Strong analytical skills with demonstrated experience in statistical analysis, process capability evaluation, and visualization of product performance trends.
  • Proven ability to communicate and collaborate across functions and locations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and make sound technical decisions in customer-facing and manufacturing environments.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically to customer locations to support product qualifications, and customer performance evaluations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in related field
  • Previous experience in a large, high volume manufacturing environment
  • Experience in managing/supervising others with demonstrated results.

Location Profile

Novelis' newly announced Bay Minette facility will be located 35 miles northeast of Mobile AL and 45 miles west of Pensacola FL and is expected to create approximately 1000 high-paying advanced careers in modern manufacturing. This highly advanced rolling and recycling facility will be the first of its kind. It will primarily serve our customers in the beverage can and automotive markets.
