What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Automotive Journalist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automotive Journalist, you need excellent writing and research skills, a strong understanding of the automotive industry, and often a degree in journalism or communications. Familiarity with content management systems, multimedia tools, and SEO best practices is typically required. Creativity, curiosity, and the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly are standout soft skills in this field. These skills are crucial for producing engaging, accurate content that resonates with readers and maintains industry credibility.

What is automotive journalism?

Automotive journalism is a specialized field of reporting that focuses on cars, the automotive industry, and related topics. Automotive journalists review new vehicles, cover industry news, attend car shows, and provide analyses on trends and technologies in the automotive world. Their work appears in magazines, newspapers, websites, and broadcast media, helping consumers and enthusiasts stay informed about the latest developments in automobiles. They often test-drive vehicles, interview industry experts, and write feature articles or produce multimedia content.

What are some common challenges automotive journalists face when balancing objectivity with manufacturer relationships?

Automotive journalists often need to maintain objectivity while testing vehicles provided by manufacturers, which can create challenges around impartial reporting. It's essential to provide honest reviews, even if it means critiquing a sponsor's product, to build credibility with readers. Navigating press events, embargoes, and managing relationships with PR teams while upholding journalistic integrity is a key part of the role. Most reputable publications have editorial guidelines to help journalists address these situations transparently and professionally.

Territory-Based | Field Sales | LocaliQ | USA TODAY
Help Automotive Dealers Grow. Build Relationships. Drive Results.
At LocaliQ part of USA Today, we help automotive dealerships win in competitive markets through data-driven, full-funnel marketing strategies designed specifically for the automotive industry.
We're looking for a relationship-driven Account Executive with direct experience working with dealers-someone who understands dealership operations, advertising challenges, and how to drive measurable results through modern marketing solutions.
This is a dealer-facing, territory-based role where success comes from being in front of customers, understanding dealership KPIs, and delivering marketing strategies that impact vehicle sales, service traffic and market share.
What You'll Do
  • Build and grow relationships with automotive dealership decision makers (GMs, Marketing Directors, Dealer Principals)
  • Drive new business while expanding and retaining dealer marketing partnerships.
  • Meet with dealership stakeholders face-to-face to uncover inventory, sales and marketing challenges.
  • Develop and present automotive-specific marketing strategies, including digital, audience targeting and local market positioning.
  • Translate dealer goals (sales, service, inventory turn, OEM compliance) into measurable marketing plans.
  • Manage your pipeline and opportunities through Salesforce
  • Partner with internal teams to deliver strong campaign results and long-term client success

What Makes This Role Different
This is not an inside sales or entry level role.
You will be working directly with auto dealerships and expected to speak their language - from inventory challenges and OEM programs, to lead generation and market competitiveness.
If you prefer selling behind a screen-this isn't it, you will be boots on the ground.
If you thrive in the field and enjoy being a trusted advisor to dealers-this is for you.
What You Bring
    • 3-5+ years of automotive sales or automotive marketing experience REQUIRED
      • (Examples: dealership sales, vendor/agency auto experience, automotive media, or digital marketing serving dealers)
    • Strong understanding of automotive retail environment, including:
      • Dealer operations and decision-making structure
      • Sales & fixed ops priorities
      • Inventory-driven marketing strategies
    • Proven ability to build relationships with dealer principals, GMs, and marketing leaders
    • Experience selling or supporting digital marketing solutions for automotive clients (highly preferred)
    • Strong consultative selling and presentation skills
    • Highly organized, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently in the field
    • Proven track record of driving revenue growth, retaining accounts, and exceeding goals

What We Offer
Compensation
  • $60,000-$70,000 + uncapped commission
  • OTE: $95K+
  • Top performers earn $140K+

Benefits & Perks
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k)
  • Paid time off
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Career growth opportunities
  • President's Club and performance recognition

Ready to own your territory and help automotive clients grow? Apply today.
