Job description

Company:Driven Brands
The Automotive Training Institute (ATI), the largest coaching and training company for Owners of Independent Repair Shops in the US and Canada. With over 1700 shops actively engaged in our program, we provide coaching, training and the largest buying program in the automotive aftermarket for Independent Shop Owners. Our members have cumulatively increased their Gross Profits by almost $3.0 Billion dollars through the ATI program.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Technical Instructor develops the hands-on capability of the technicians who power ATI member shops. Where ATI's business curriculum equips owners and managers to run stronger businesses, this role equips their technicians to diagnose accurately, repair correctly, and work productively on increasingly complex vehicles. As an industry subject-matter expert organization, ATI expects its Technical Instructors not merely to teach established material, but to bring current and emerging vehicle technology into the classroom and the shop bay - keeping member technicians ahead of the vehicles arriving in their service lanes.
This role delivers training in two live formats - in-person, hands-on instruction in shop and lab environments, and live virtual instruction - and is expected to be equally effective in both. Beyond delivery, the Technical Instructor contributes to the development of content for both live and on-demand technical classes, helping build the catalog they teach from.
Key Responsibilities
Instructional Delivery
  • Deliver engaging, technically accurate instruction to technicians of ATI member shops in both live formats: in-person hands-on (shop/lab) and live virtual.
  • Adapt delivery to mixed experience levels, from apprentice to master technician, ensuring every attendee leaves with skills they can apply immediately.
  • Model and enforce professional shop safety practices in all hands-on sessions.

Content Development
  • Contribute to the development of new technical training content for both live classes (in-person and virtual) and on-demand offerings.
  • Maintain the technical accuracy and currency of assigned courseware; recommend and contribute updates as vehicle technology, tooling, and industry practice evolve.
  • Provide structured feedback from the classroom and lab to inform course development.

Training Environment & Equipment
  • Prepare and maintain training vehicles, components, tools, and diagnostic equipment for hands-on sessions.
  • Ensure lab and shop training environments are safe, organized, and professional.

Professional Development
  • Maintain all required ASE certifications in current status and pursue additional credentials relevant to the course catalog.
  • Stay current on vehicle technology, diagnostic methods, and adult learning practices.

Team Contribution
  • Support other member-facing activities as assigned, which may include event participation, facilitation support, or contribution to ATI conferences and programs.

Qualifications
Required
  • Current ASE Master Technician certification and/or ASE L1 Advanced Engine Performance Specialist certification.
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience as a professional automotive technician.
  • Demonstrated diagnostic proficiency across major vehicle systems.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills; ability to explain complex systems clearly to varied audiences.
  • Comfort delivering live instruction on virtual platforms.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel as required.

Preferred
  • Both ASE Master and L1 certifications held concurrently.
  • Hybrid/EV credentials (e.g., ASE xEV certification) and ADAS training or certification.
  • Prior experience as a technical trainer, instructor, or mentor of technicians.
  • Experience developing technical training content or courseware.
  • Independent repair shop experience and familiarity with the ATI member shop environment.
  • Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish).

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
  • Hybrid delivery model: in-person hands-on instruction in shop/lab environments plus live virtual instruction.
  • Regular travel to training sites, member events, and ATI conferences.
  • Hands-on work around vehicles, lifts, and shop equipment; ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 pounds, and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Occasional evening or weekend availability for events and travel.
