Job description

Build the systems that change how K12 works.

K12 Computers is building a new Automation, Robotics & Systems department focused on making electronics processing faster, safer, more consistent, and easier to scale.

We process large volumes of Chromebooks, laptops, tablets, and other technology. Our team is developing practical tools and equipment that improve how products move through inspection, testing, identification, sorting, repair, preparation, and resale.

We are looking for a hands-on builder to join us early and help turn ideas into working systems.

This is a great role for someone who enjoys designing useful things, building prototypes, making parts, wiring components, troubleshooting problems, and seeing a machine go from an idea to something people use every day.


What this role is—and is not

This is not a job where you sit behind a desk all day writing PLC code or creating designs that someone else has to figure out how to build.

You will help design and build the physical systems themselves: frames, fixtures, mechanisms, sensors, wiring, actuators, controls, and the operator-facing pieces that make them useful.

You do not need to be an expert in every part of robotics, controls, software, fabrication, and electrical engineering. We have software engineers and will use outside specialists when a project calls for them.

What matters most is that you are a capable, curious builder with enough range to take a project forward—and enough judgment to know when to ask for help.


What you’ll be doing

  • Help design, prototype, build, test, and improve custom automation equipment.
  • Build practical systems that improve production, quality, safety, and efficiency.
  • Create machine frames, brackets, fixtures, guards, mounts, enclosures, and mechanisms.
  • Use CAD, 3D printing, off-the-shelf components, basic machining, and fabrication to move ideas into real prototypes.
  • Assemble and troubleshoot mechanical motion systems, actuators, sensors, and control hardware.
  • Install and troubleshoot cameras, sensors, switches, relays, power supplies, motors, and other machine components.
  • Assist with wiring and organizing machine electrical systems in a safe, clean, serviceable way.
  • Help integrate physical equipment with testing tools, cameras, barcode readers, and other operational systems.
  • Observe warehouse processes, talk with operators, and turn real problems into useful physical solutions.
  • Test prototypes, document what worked and what did not, and improve designs quickly.
  • Help create straightforward build notes, parts lists, maintenance information, and operating instructions.
  • Support installation, repair, upgrades, and troubleshooting of equipment once it is in use.

Experience that would be especially useful

We are not expecting one person to check every box, but experience with any of the following is valuable:

  • Mechanical design, CAD, Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or similar tools
  • Machine assembly, custom fixtures, conveyors, or material-handling equipment
  • 3D printing, CNC, manual machining, welding, or metal fabrication
  • Servo systems, stepper motors, linear rails, belts, lead screws, bearings, and motion control
  • Industrial sensors, cameras, barcode scanners, relays, switches, and basic electrical troubleshooting
  • Pneumatics, solenoids, cylinders, valves, and air systems
  • Raspberry Pi, Jetson, Arduino, ESP32, Linux, ROS, PLCs, or industrial control hardware
  • Machine vision, cameras, device testing, electronics repair, IT asset disposition, manufacturing, or warehouse systems
  • Safety devices, emergency stops, guarding, and practical machine-safety thinking

What matters more than a degree

A degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, manufacturing, industrial technology, or a related field is welcome, but it is not required.

We care more about what you can build, repair, design, or figure out. If you have a portfolio, project photos, videos, CAD work, a personal workshop, a GitHub page, a YouTube channel, or examples of machines and projects you have worked on, please include them with your application.

The environment

This is a new department inside a growing company, so the work will not be overly rigid or corporate. Some days you may be designing a mechanism. Other days you may be printing parts, assembling a prototype, tracking down a wiring issue, testing an equipment setup, or helping install a solution on the floor.

You will have room to contribute ideas, take ownership of projects, and grow with the business. You will also be joining at the beginning, which means we need someone comfortable helping build the process—not someone waiting for every detail to already be defined.
