OVERVIEW:

The Controls Lead System Specialist (LSS) serves as the on-site project leader responsible for planning, executing, and completing control systems projects with assigned customers in a safe and cost-effective manner. This pivotal role encompasses overseeing the entire project lifecycle from system programming to installation coordination, system and network commissioning, and project closeout.

The LSS is accountable for the overall financial outcomes of assigned projects, including managing costs such as labor and materials, while maintaining high customer satisfaction and profitable results. They proactively seek additional work through change orders and ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal legal requirements, upholding the highest ethical standards.

 Key RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Project Leadership & Execution

  • On-Site Leadership: Act as the primary project leader to plan and execute control systems projects.
  • Full Lifecycle Management: Perform or delegate tasks including hardware design, system programming, installation coordination, and project closeout.
  • Resource Coordination: Develop project plans and coordinate technical resources to ensure timely, cost-effective completion.
  • Commissioning: Oversee the loading, device verification, and commissioning of all system controllers.
  • System Validation: Validate complete system functionality and resolve issues with subcontractors to ensure proper operation.
  • Documentation: Provide accurate project "as-built" drawings and comprehensive commissioning documentation.

 

Financial Management & Profitability

Communicate with the project's assigned Project Manager for:

  • P&L Responsibility: Accountable for project financial outcomes, including costs, billings, and collections.
  • Cash Flow Management: Complete project billings promptly and accurately to maintain favorable cash flow and profitability objectives.
  • Revenue Growth: Actively identify and secure change orders by assessing contractual scope versus client-issued bulletins and field directives.
  • Forecasting: Provide management with monthly revenue, cost, and gross margin forecasts

Technical Expertise & Quality Assurance

  • Advanced Programming: Implement controls and software programming using established company protocols.
  • Design Communication: Communicate technical design and operational details clearly to customers, internal staff, and subcontractors.
  • Field Oversight: Coordinate on-site panel and field device placement, ensuring installation adheres to company standards.
  • Complex Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve complex, integrated system issues.

 

Team Leadership & Development

  • Mentorship: Provide coaching, mentoring, and technical support to System Technicians, Electrical Installers, and System Designers.
  • Subcontractor Management: Provide guidance to subcontractors to ensure tasks are completed on time, within budget, and within contract scope.
  • Skill Improvement: Actively drive the technical proficiency of the field team (Level I-III Techs).

 

Customer & Stakeholder Relationships

  • Primary Liaison: Facilitate all communication with the customer throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Relationship Building: Maintain long-term relationships with contractors, clients, and consultants.
  • Customer Training: Conduct site-specific training for owner/operators and provide required O&M manuals.

 

Compliance & Safety

  • Regulatory Adherence: Ensure compliance with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and all legal requirements.
  • Safety Leadership: Adhere to all safety standards, aiming for a zero-accident environment.

 

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs):

  • Field Productivity: Completion at or under forecasted labor hours and Gross Margin.
  • Safety: 100% adherence to LOTO (Lock Out Tag Out) and PPE protocols; zero recordable injuries on lead projects.
  • Project Delivery: 100% on-time submission of "as-built" documentation and commissioning reports upon project completion.
  • Customer Satisfaction: Obtain positive project closeout feedback and maintain 100% warranty execution efficiency.
  • Change Order Revenue: Identify and capture scope deviations, contributing to a minimum 10% increase in original contract value.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience: 7-10+ years of progressive experience in the building automation industry with demonstrated leadership roles.
  • Technical Mastery: Deep knowledge of multiple control manufacturer systems (e.g., Distech, Schneider); Tridium Niagara N4 certification, EcoStruxure Control Expert is highly preferred.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; technical degree or equivalent industry experience preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Strong understanding of HVAC systems and Control Theory.
    • Proficiency in project execution construction cost management.
    • Excellent negotiation, interpersonal, and communication skills.
    • Advanced computer skills and ability to utilize business systems to track key metrics.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to perform physical duties (climbing ladders, lifting 50+ lbs.) to assist with complex field tasks in various environments (mechanical rooms, rooftops).
  • Travel: Willingness to travel as needed within the assigned region.
