What is the difference between Automation Scripting vs Test Automation Engineer?

AspectAutomation ScriptingTest Automation Engineer
Required CredentialsBasic programming knowledge, scripting languages (Python, Bash)Programming skills, testing frameworks, sometimes certifications in testing
Work EnvironmentDeveloping scripts for automation tasks across various systemsDesigning, developing, and maintaining automated test scripts for software testing
Industry UsageUsed in IT, DevOps, system administrationPrimarily in software development and quality assurance

Automation Scripting involves creating scripts to automate routine tasks, while Test Automation Engineers focus on automating software testing processes. Both roles require programming skills, but Test Automation Engineers typically have a stronger emphasis on testing frameworks and quality assurance practices.

Is scripting used for automation?

Yes, scripting is commonly used in automation roles to create scripts that perform repetitive tasks, improve efficiency, and reduce manual effort. Automation scripting often involves languages like Python, Bash, or PowerShell and requires knowledge of scripting tools and environments.

How much do automation specialists make in the US?

Automation specialists in the US typically earn between $70,000 and $110,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Salaries can increase with proficiency in scripting languages like Python or PowerShell and familiarity with automation tools such as Jenkins or Ansible.

Which 5 jobs will survive AI?

Automation Scripting roles are likely to persist as they require complex problem-solving, creativity, and understanding of specific business processes that are difficult for AI to fully replicate. Jobs involving strategic planning, advanced technical skills, and human interaction, such as software development, cybersecurity, data analysis, healthcare, and education, are also expected to remain in demand. These roles often require adaptability and critical thinking beyond current AI capabilities.

Will AI replace automation engineer?

AI is unlikely to fully replace automation engineers, as their role involves designing, developing, and maintaining complex automation systems that require human oversight, problem-solving, and customization. Instead, AI tools are expected to augment their work, enabling engineers to focus on higher-level tasks and innovation. Skills in scripting, programming, and understanding automation platforms remain essential for automation engineers to adapt to evolving technologies.

Job description

JOB SUMMARY
Truity Credit Union is seeking a data-savvy and forward-thinking Data and AI Engineer to advance our data management and AI enablement capabilities. This role focuses on automating data workflows, refining data quality, and leveraging AI/ML tools to solve practical business problems. Rather than full-scale software development, this position emphasizes data transformation, enrichment, querying, and AI-assisted processing, especially using Python, Node.js and SQL.
You'll collaborate with teams such as Software Engineering, Data, Business Analysts, and Other technology stakeholders to create intelligent workflows, build/refine models and apply AI to real-world business/operational problems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Design and implement data manipulation pipelines using scripting languages like Python and SQL for ingestion, cleansing, enrichment, and formatting.
  2. Apply AI tools and frameworks to automate data classification, validation, and reporting tasks.
  3. Configure and test generative models (LLMs) to enhance data-driven workflows and knowledge management.
  4. Build lightweight scripts and tools for on-demand data exploration, transformation, and summarization.
  5. Partner with analysts and business users to identify AI-powered opportunities for streamlining data operations.
  6. Integrate LLM-based agents for structured and unstructured data extraction, Q&A, and document parsing.
  7. Use vector databases, semantic search, and embedding models to enhance data retrieval and knowledge systems.
  8. Support and maintain data pipelines across structured systems (e.g., SQL warehouses) and semi-structured data sources.
  9. Leverage prompt engineering and AI orchestration frameworks (e.g., LangChain, semantic routers) to optimize task handling.
  10. Monitor AI/data automation scripts to ensure accuracy, transparency, and compliance with data privacy standards.
  11. Document data workflows and AI tools clearly for reuse, maintainability, and auditability.
  12. Collaborate with the risk, security, and compliance teams to ensure responsible and ethical use of AI systems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
  • Proficiency in Python for scripting, data manipulation, and automation.
  • Strong command of SQL for querying, transforming, and joining relational data.
  • Experience with LLM tools and frameworks such as LangChain, OpenAI APIs, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
  • Familiarity with vector stores (e.g., FAISS, Weaviate) and embedding-based search.
  • Understanding of data pipelines and orchestration tools (e.g., dbt, Airflow, Pandas workflows).
  • Knowledge of AI agent frameworks and task routing techniques.
  • Ability to build and refine prompt templates and AI-assisted data workflows.
  • Comfort working with cloud environments (e.g., Azure, AWS, or GCP).
  • Strong documentation, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Knowledge of version control, CI/CD pipelines, and containerization tools is preferred
  • Awareness of ethical AI, privacy considerations, and data compliance standards.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, or related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics, or scripting-heavy roles.
  • 2+ years working with AI/ML tools or automation frameworks, especially for data-related use cases.

REGULATORY COMPLIANCE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Must maintain confidentiality and adhere to policies including Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC), Anti-Money Laundering (AML), and Identity Theft Red Flags.
  • Regular attendance and active collaboration are essential.
