Senior MEP Superintendent

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior MEP Superintendent to lead the field execution of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building systems on large, complex construction projects. This individual will be responsible for driving MEP activities from early coordination and procurement through installation, startup, commissioning, and final turnover.

The ideal candidate is a strong field leader with extensive experience managing complex MEP scopes, subcontractors, schedules, manpower, and multidisciplinary teams. This position requires someone who can anticipate challenges, resolve field conflicts, and maintain accountability for safety, quality, schedule, and overall project performance.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate field execution of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, controls, and related building systems.
• Manage MEP activities throughout the project lifecycle, including procurement, engineering, coordination, installation, startup, testing, commissioning, closeout, and turnover.
• Develop and maintain detailed MEP schedules covering engineering, coordination, equipment procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning milestones.
• Coordinate closely with project leadership, engineers, design consultants, subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, and owner representatives to resolve MEP-related issues.
• Lead MEP subcontractors and field teams while maintaining accountability for safety, quality, schedule, manpower, and productivity.
• Supervise and mentor MEP Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, field engineers, and other project team members as applicable.
• Monitor field progress against the project schedule and proactively identify potential delays, constraints, and sequencing issues.
• Develop recovery plans and field solutions when MEP activities fall behind schedule or conflict with other trades.
• Review subcontractor manpower and resource allocation to ensure critical project areas and systems are properly staffed.
• Coordinate MEP installation with structural, architectural, civil, and other construction scopes.
• Identify constructability, logistics, access, sequencing, and installation challenges early enough to develop effective solutions.
• Work closely with coordination/VDC teams to ensure field conditions and installation requirements are incorporated into coordination efforts.
• Review drawings, specifications, approved submittals, and contract documents to ensure field installation meets project requirements.
• Participate in subcontractor scope development and clearly define trade responsibilities and temporary system requirements.
• Support the review of subcontractor progress and payment applications based on completed work, remaining scope, manpower, and schedule.
• Lead field planning to ensure areas are ready for MEP installation prior to mobilization of crews.
• Partner with project engineering and quality teams to develop and execute MEP quality-control plans.
• Drive the turnover process, including system startup, testing, commissioning, punch-list completion, documentation, and owner acceptance.
• Communicate project status, schedule risks, manpower needs, and critical issues to project leadership, owners, and subcontractors.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of relevant construction experience with significant responsibility for mechanical and/or electrical systems on complex projects.
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred; equivalent field experience and technical training will also be considered.
• Demonstrated experience leading MEP field operations on large, technically complex construction projects.
• Strong understanding of the coordination and interdependencies between mechanical, electrical, plumbing, controls, life-safety, and other building systems.
• Experience managing subcontractors, field personnel, schedules, manpower, sequencing, and construction logistics.
• Strong understanding of MEP startup, testing, commissioning, and turnover processes.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, submittals, schedules, and technical documentation.
• Proven ability to identify potential schedule and constructability issues and develop practical field solutions.
• Strong leadership skills with experience developing and mentoring field teams.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills with the ability to confidently communicate with project executives, owners, engineers, and subcontractors.
• Proficiency with construction management, scheduling, documentation, and reporting technology.

Mechanical Expertise

Candidates with a mechanical focus should have strong knowledge of systems such as:

• Central utility and mechanical plants
• Chilled-water and heating-water systems
• Chillers, boilers, pumps, and associated piping
• HVAC and major air-distribution systems
• Controls and building automation systems
• Mechanical equipment startup and commissioning

Electrical Expertise

Candidates with an electrical focus should have strong knowledge of systems such as:

• Medium- and low-voltage power distribution
• Switchgear and electrical distribution equipment
• Generators and emergency power systems
• UPS systems
• Controls and low-voltage systems
• Electrical startup, testing, and commissioning

Leadership Profile

The successful candidate will be a highly visible field leader who can take ownership of complex MEP scopes while keeping multiple trades and project stakeholders aligned. This individual should be comfortable leading large teams, making decisions in fast-paced field environments, identifying risks before they impact the project, and driving accountability through completion.

Work Environment

This is a field-based construction position requiring regular presence on active project sites. The role may require climbing stairs and ladders, navigating active construction areas, working around heavy equipment and building systems, and occasionally lifting or moving materials or equipment up to 50 pounds.
