Job description

About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

Our Enterprise Software team builds the digital backbone that powers our global operations. We aren’t just "internal IT"—we are a product-centric engineering team dedicated to eliminating friction. You will design and build scalable, intelligent platforms that redefine the employee experience and automate service delivery across enterprise functions such as IT, HR, Finance, Facilities and beyond.

This role will report to our Sr. Director, People System and will be located in Palo Alto, CA , Irvine, CA or Atlanta, GA.

Responsibilities
  • Architect & Build: Lead the design and delivery of cloud-native, highly reliable enterprise services that support thousands of global users.

  • AI-First Engineering: Architect workflows and decision-support systems that leverage LLMs and machine learning to move beyond manual ticketing into proactive, automated resolution.

  • Engineering Excellence: Champion high standards for code quality, security, and performance. You will lead architecture reviews and mentor junior engineers on the team.

  • Full-Lifecycle Ownership: Own complex technical initiatives from initial concept through production deployment and scaling.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with stakeholders in HR, Finance, and Facilities to translate complex business processes into elegant, automated technical solutions.

  • Automation and Process Improvement: Identify opportunities for deep process automation across the platform. Leverage advanced automation capabilities, such as AI agents and orchestration, to streamline service delivery processes.

  • System Integration: Design robust API integrations and event-driven architectures to unify disparate enterprise data silos.

  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical guidance and leadership in Applied AI architecture and industry best practices. Collaborate with other technical teams to ensure alignment of AI models with existing systems and processes.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.

  • Experience: 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a proven track record of building mission-critical enterprise systems.

  • Core Fundamentals: Expert-level understanding of system design, distributed architectures, and asynchronous communication patterns.

  • Stack Agnostic: Deep proficiency in at least one backend language (e.g., Java, Python, Go, or C#) and experience with modern frontend frameworks (e.g., React or Next.js).

  • Cloud & DevSecOps: Hands-on experience with major cloud providers (AWS/Azure/GCP), containerization (Docker/K8s), and a "security-first" approach to CI/CD.

  • Data & Events: Experience with event-driven systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ) and building scalable data pipelines.

  • Modern Tooling: High proficiency with AI-assisted development (GitHub Copilot, Cursor) to accelerate delivery and code quality.

  • Strategic Mindset: You understand ITIL or ITSM frameworks but prefer to solve those problems through automation and self-service rather than manual workflows.

  • Product Thinking: You don’t just build what is asked; you advocate for the best user experience for your fellow employees.
