What is an automation engineer?

Automation Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and implement automated systems and processes to improve efficiency, quality, and productivity in various industries. They work with technologies such as robotics, control systems, and software to automate repetitive or complex tasks. Their responsibilities often include programming, troubleshooting, and maintaining automation equipment, as well as collaborating with other engineers to optimize workflows. Automation Engineers are employed in sectors like manufacturing, IT, automotive, and pharmaceuticals.

What does an automation engineer do?

As an automation engineer, your job is to design and develop automated machines for your company. Your responsibilities may include determining the best way to implement automation, creating devices that meet the company's needs and specifications, testing robots to ensure they perform as designed, and monitoring existing automation to check if repair or replacement is needed. Many duties of this job vary by industry. For example, automation engineers work in areas like the automotive industry, food preparation and packaging, electronics production, and appliance production, and each of these fields has different materials and objectives. However, regardless of industry, most automation engineers work with both hardware and software.

What are some common challenges automation engineers face when integrating new systems into existing workflows?

Automation Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new automation solutions with legacy systems, including compatibility issues and data migration complexities. Coordinating with cross-functional teams—such as IT, operations, and production—can require extensive communication to ensure seamless implementation. Additionally, balancing the need for system reliability with innovation and minimizing downtime during transitions are key concerns. Proactively addressing these challenges through thorough planning and testing helps ensure successful integration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automation Engineer, you need a strong grasp of control systems, programming (such as PLC, Python, or C++), and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with automation platforms like Rockwell, Siemens, or SCADA systems, as well as certifications like ISA or relevant vendor-specific credentials, is highly valued. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with diverse teams and troubleshooting complex issues. These skills and qualifications are critical for designing efficient automated solutions, minimizing downtime, and ensuring seamless integration of systems.

Job description

Position Summary:

Prestige Trucking Insurance is seeking a Senior Automation Engineer (AI, Systems & Infrastructure) to design, build, and own the automation systems that will fundamentally transform how the company operates. This role focuses on eliminating manual, repetitive, and error‑prone workflows across insurance operations by implementing robust, scalable automation solutions. This is a senior‑level role with full ownership over automation strategy and execution. The Senior Automation Engineer will work directly with leadership and internal teams to understand real insurance workflows and replace them with well‑engineered automation systems. Automation at Prestige is not a side initiative—it is a critical pillar of how the business will scale. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise, strong insurance agency experience, and the ability to independently identify problems, design solutions, and deliver measurable business impact.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Design and build end‑to‑end automation systems using Python, APIs, AI, and cloud infrastructure
• Replace manual workflows across submissions, quoting, renewals, endorsements, policy servicing, and carrier portals
• Automate workflows involving email ingestion, PDF processing, OCR, document classification, and web portals
• Build multi‑step, orchestrated automation pipelines rather than one‑off scripts
• Work directly with internal teams to understand existing processes and redesign them for automation
• Develop and maintain a centralized automation platform with logging, monitoring, error handling, and recovery
• Make architecture and tooling decisions that balance speed, scalability, cost, and long‑term reliability
• Implement AI and LLM integrations where appropriate to improve efficiency and accuracy (not as a black box)
• Design systems that interface with carrier portals, agency management systems, and internal tools
• Ensure automation solutions are secure, auditable, and resilient
• Translate business workflows into technical systems with clear documentation
• Define timelines, milestones, and execution plans for automation initiatives
• Continuously identify inefficiencies and propose automation opportunities across departments

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities (KSA’s):

  • Automation System Design – Ability to design and build scalable, maintainable automation systems that replace manual business processes.
  • Python & Backend Engineering Expertise – Advanced ability to design backend services, automation pipelines, and integration layers using Python.
  • API Integration & System Connectivity – Strong ability to integrate third‑party APIs, internal systems, and event‑driven workflows reliably.
  • Web & Document Automation – Ability to automate web‑based workflows using tools such as Playwright or Selenium, and process PDFs using OCR and parsing techniques.
  • AI & LLM Integration – Ability to apply AI and LLMs thoughtfully to real workflows, with an understanding of limitations, security risks, and failure modes.
  • Workflow Orchestration & Pipelines – Ability to design multi‑step automation pipelines with orchestration, retries, error handling, and observability.
  • Cloud Infrastructure Knowledge – Strong working knowledge of AWS and/or Google Cloud for hosting, scaling, and system reliability.
  • Insurance Operations Expertise – Deep understanding of insurance agency workflows including submissions, quoting, binding, renewals, endorsements, and carrier interactions.
  • Systems Thinking & Problem Solving – Ability to analyze complex processes, identify inefficiencies, and design complete automation solutions.
  • Ownership & Execution – Ability to operate independently, define priorities, execute without hand‑holding, and deliver outcomes.
  • Communication & Technical Clarity – Ability to clearly explain system designs, tradeoffs, and automation logic to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required

• 7+ years of experience in software engineering, automation engineering, or systems engineering
• Proven experience designing and building production‑quality automation systems
• Strong Python expertise with backend and automation system design
• Experience with API integrations and system‑to‑system connectivity
• Experience with web automation (Playwright, Selenium, or equivalent)
• Experience with PDF parsing, OCR, and email processing
• Experience implementing AI or LLM‑based automation with strong system understanding
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS and/or Google Cloud)
• Direct experience working within insurance agencies or insurance operations
• Strong understanding of insurance workflows and carrier interactions
• Ability to work fully on‑site in Tamarac, FL

Preferred

• Experience designing centralized automation platforms or internal tooling ecosystems
• Experience building monitoring, logging, and observability into automation systems
• Experience working with sensitive or regulated data environments
• Experience modernizing legacy or highly manual industries
• Experience working closely with business leadership on operational transformation
• Familiarity with workflow engines, task queues, or event‑driven architectures

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

• On‑site role based in Tamarac, FL
• Office‑based with standard business hours
• Extended hours may be required during major workflow rollouts or system migrations
• Frequent use of computers and technical tools for system design and development

Standard business work hours are 9am-6pm.
