Automation Engineer Consultant information

What is an automation engineer consultant?

Automation Engineer Consultants are professionals who specialize in designing, implementing, and optimizing automated systems and processes for organizations. They typically assess existing workflows, identify areas that can be improved with automation, and develop solutions that enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve quality. These consultants often work with a range of technologies, including robotics, software automation tools, and control systems. Their expertise is valuable in industries such as manufacturing, IT, and logistics, where automation can significantly impact productivity. In addition to technical skills, they also provide strategic advice to help organizations transition smoothly to automated processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automation engineer consultant?

To thrive as an Automation Engineer Consultant, you need a solid background in engineering, programming (such as Python, Java, or C#), and experience with automation frameworks, often supported by a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with tools like PLCs, SCADA systems, robotics platforms, and certifications such as ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP) are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and project management skills help you stand out when advising clients and leading implementations. These competencies are essential to deliver reliable, efficient automation solutions tailored to client needs and ensure project success.

What are some common challenges automation engineer consultants face when working with clients, and how can they be addressed?

Automation Engineer Consultants often encounter challenges such as integrating new automation solutions with clients' legacy systems and managing varying levels of technical expertise among client teams. Clear communication, thorough documentation, and incremental implementation can help bridge technical gaps and ensure smooth transitions. Additionally, consultants should prioritize stakeholder engagement and provide ongoing training to maximize adoption and long-term success of automation projects.

Job description

What We Need

NetBrain is looking for a seasoned network automation leader who's ready to trade individual troubleshooting wins for enterprise-wide transformation. In this role, you'll sit at the intersection of enterprise networking, automation, and business strategy by leading executive workshops, translating operational pain points into automation roadmaps, and advising some of the world's largest organizations on how to run their networks smarter, faster, and with far less manual effort.

This is a role for someone who's spent years deep in routing, switching, and multi-vendor architectures but has grown into a trusted advisor. You are as comfortable whiteboarding with a CIO as they are reviewing a runbook design with an engineer. If you want your technical depth to drive business outcomes, build lasting customer relationships, and shape where NetBrain's product goes next, keep reading for more details.

What You'll Do

Customer Workshops and Strategic Consulting

  • Plan and facilitate onsite and virtual customer workshops with executives, network leaders, architects, and operations teams to surface priorities, pain points, and automation opportunities.
  • Translate business objectives into prioritized NetBrain use cases, automation strategies, and phased maturity roadmaps.
  • Build stakeholder consensus on automation priorities, ownership, and governance.
  • Deliver executive-level readouts summarizing findings, recommendations, and next steps.

 Business Value and Adoption

  • Identify opportunities for NetBrain to reduce operational effort, accelerate troubleshooting, and strengthen compliance; establish value hypotheses and success criteria.
  • Quantify business outcomes (hours saved, MTTR improvement, change-risk reduction, tool consolidation) and prioritize use cases by impact, feasibility, and readiness.
  • Develop customer-specific adoption and value realization plans; conduct periodic value reviews and recommend roadmap adjustments.
  • Document customer success stories and promote broader adoption of NetBrain capabilities across teams.

Network Automation and Technical Advisory

  • Assess network operations processes and define requirements for runbooks, network intents, dashboards, and automation workflows covering troubleshooting, incident response, change validation, and compliance.
  • Provide architectural guidance for automation across complex, multi-vendor environments; review designs for scalability, security, and alignment with objectives.
  • Collaborate with NetBrain architects and engineers to translate workshop outcomes into technical requirements, including pre/post-change validation, continuous assessments, and closed-loop remediation.
  • Advise on integrations with ITSM, monitoring, and observability platforms; stay current on emerging automation and AI technologies.

Customer Engagement and Program Leadership

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to customer technology leaders; build relationships with sponsors, champions, and stakeholders.
  • Define governance, roles, and operating models for automation programs; identify and help resolve adoption risks and organizational barriers.
  • Maintain clear documentation of findings, decisions, and commitments; partner with Customer Success, Professional Services, Sales, Solution Engineering, and Product to deliver a coordinated experience.
  • Provide structured feedback to Product and Engineering on customer needs and market trends.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience, plus 8+ years in enterprise networking, network operations, network automation, or infrastructure consulting, including direct experience in a large enterprise environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead customer workshops, discovery sessions, or strategic planning engagements, translating technical topics into business language for audiences ranging from engineers to executives.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills; able to manage multiple engagements independently while collaborating with global, cross-functional teams; willing to travel to customer sites for multi-day workshops (see Travel and Work Environment).
  • Should have experience in several of the following areas:
    • Enterprise network architectures and protocols across multi-vendor environments: routing/switching, TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, MPLS, VPNs, VLANs; firewalls (Palo Alto, Cisco, Fortinet, Check Point, Juniper); load balancing (F5); wireless (Cisco, Aruba, Juniper Mist); data center (Cisco ACI/Nexus, Arista, VMware NSX); SD-WAN; and public cloud networking (Azure, AWS, GCP).
    • Network configuration management, compliance, vulnerability, and lifecycle management; monitoring, observability, and telemetry platforms; ITSM platforms (e.g., ServiceNow).
    • Automation and integration technologies: REST APIs, JSON/XML/YAML, NETCONF/RESTCONF/YANG, Python, Ansible, PowerShell, Terraform, Git, CI/CD, and experience building automated diagnostics, health checks, or remediation workflows.
    • This role does not require full-time software development, but candidates must understand automation design principles and work effectively with automation engineers and architects.
  • Willingness to travel up to 40-50% within your territory as required.
  • Manual Dexterity: Repetitive motion of wrists, hands and fingers for using a computer.
  • Stationary Tasks: Sitting for extended periods, remaining in a stationary position.

Preferred Expertise

  • Previous experience with the NetBrain platform (Dynamic Maps, Path Analysis, Runbooks, Network Intents, Preventive Automation, Golden Assessments).
  • Background as a network architect, senior network engineer, automation engineer, infrastructure consultant, or operations leader, including building or leading an automation program or center of excellence.
  • Management or technology consulting/customer advisory experience - business cases, ROI analyses, executive presentations - plus familiarity with AI applications in network operations and ITIL practices.
  • Relevant certifications (CCNP, CCIE, JNCIP, JNCIE, PCNSE, AWS, Azure, ITIL, or equivalent) and experience with global customers and distributed teams.
