Job description

Salary: $67,625 - $89,093

AWC specializes in delivering integrated water and wastewater treatment plants and other specialized industrial packaged solutions. We offer clients advanced in-house engineering and design with 3D modeling, piloting, fabrication and machining, an in-house control panel shop, and a full range of field services enabling true turn-key solutions.

AWC is growing its electrical design capability and is seeking a skilled Electrical Design Technologist to join our team. This is a career-level technologist role not a steppingstone. You will be the dedicated technical resource who drives drawing production, documentation, and drafting excellence, freeing our engineers to focus on engineering decisions and design.

You will work alongside our engineering team on water and wastewater treatment projects, contributing to everything from initial layouts to final construction packages. If you are a detail-driven professional who takes pride in building accurate, standards-compliant drawing sets and wants real ownership over the technical documentation process, this role is built for you.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Drawing Production & Drafting

  • Lead the development and drafting of full electrical and I&C project document packages, including: Electrical Single Line Diagrams, Schematic Diagrams, Instrumentation Loop Diagrams, Control Panel Layouts, Site Electrical Drawings, Cable Schedules, Cable Tray Layout Drawings, and General Arrangement Drawings.
  • Create and update engineering drawings using AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical, translating engineering specifications and markups into complete, submission-ready drawing packages.
  • Coordinate drawings across disciplines (electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, and process) to ensure consistency and accuracy across all project deliverables.

Control Panel & Technical Documentation

  • Prepare control panel layouts and wiring diagrams using established templates and AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Generate Bills of Materials (BOMs), drawing schedules, and materials lists in support of fabrication and procurement.
  • Assist with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of electrical control panels, working with both hardware and control systems teams.

Drawing Standards & Quality Control

  • Develop and maintain drawing libraries, file structures, naming conventions, version control, and document management practices.
  • Review drawings for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to applicable codes and standards before submission.
  • Develop and improve drawing templates and standards to support consistent, efficient electrical design across all projects.
  • Contribute to AWCs Quality Management System through design reviews, feedback sessions, and process improvement initiatives.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Act as electrical design lead on projects, supporting engineering and fabrication teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with internal departments (fabrication, sales, engineering) and external stakeholders (vendors, owners, owners engineers) to achieve project outcomes.
  • Support the sales team with proposals, cost estimates, and technical materials for pre-sale requirements.
  • Stay current with industry best practices and technologies through training and self-improvement initiatives.

Requirements

Education

  • Diploma or degree from a technical institution with relevant CAD or electrical engineering coursework; an accredited Diploma in Engineering Technology, CAD Technology, or related field is preferred.
  • E.T. or C.Tech. designation is considered an asset.

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in electrical design of industrial equipment and packaged systems.
  • Strong hands-on experience with the full range of electrical drafting deliverables: single line diagrams, cable schedules, electrical schematics, interface drawings, site layouts, panel drawings and schedules, conduit layouts, and instrumentation loop diagrams.
  • 3+ years working with AutoCAD Electrical drafting software.
  • Familiarity with applicable electrical codes and standards (e.g., CEC, NEC, applicable IEC standards).
  • Experience with water and wastewater treatment process design is a strong asset.
  • Experience with instrumentation, controls, and automation systems is an asset.
  • Experience with fabrication and/or construction of custom electrical control panels is an asset.
  • 3D modelling experience is an asset.

Skills & Attributes

  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to drawing quality and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple drawing packages simultaneously, prioritize tasks independently, and meet project deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with a continuous improvement mindset.
