About the Role


Design Works Engineering is seeking an experienced and driven Electrical Engineer to join our expanding Calgary office. This is an exciting opportunity for a professional who enjoys delivering practical, high-performing building and subdivision electrical designsfrom detailed power distribution to municipal-level systems that support community growth.
We are looking for individuals with 5+ years of experience in electrical consulting engineering, particularly in building electrical systems, fire alarm/life safety, and municipal/subdivision power and communication design. Candidates must understand construction realities, communicate clearly, and take pride in delivering efficient, well-coordinated, cost-effective electrical systems.
As part of our multidisciplinary team, you will collaborate closely with architects, civil and mechanical departments, planners, developers, and major regional clients.


What Youll Do


Building Electrical Design

  • Develop complete electrical designs for commercial, residential, industrial, hospitality, institutional, and mixed-use buildings.
  • Perform load calculations, short-circuit/coordination reviews, and electrical system sizing.
  • Prepare lighting layouts, lighting control systems, and photometric studies.
  • Design fire alarm systems, life safety systems, and emergency/standby power systems (UPS, generators).
  • Prepare grounding, bonding, heat trace, and communication system designs.


Municipal & Subdivision Electrical Design

  • Design low-voltage and medium-voltage distribution systems for new subdivisions and large land development projects.
  • Produce streetlighting, distribution pathway, and communication network layouts.
  • Coordinate with the City of Calgary, utility/telecom providers, and other authorities for approvals and permitting.
  • Prepare feasibility studies, servicing reviews, and electrical planning for new communities.


Project Coordination & Documentation

  • Produce electrical drawings, specifications, tender packages, building permit submissions, and construction documents.
  • Support energy audits, feasibility studies, and code-compliance assessments.
  • Coordinate with mechanical, structural, civil, and architectural teams to deliver integrated designs.


Construction & Client Support

  • Review shop drawings, respond to RFIs, and perform site inspections during construction.
  • Attend client meetings, provide technical guidance, and maintain strong communication throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Deliver practical, code-compliant solutions aligned with client goals and project budgets.


Leadership & Mentorship

  • Lead projects independently and manage schedules, deliverables, and client expectations.
  • Mentor junior designers and EITs to build capacity within the Calgary electrical team.


What You Bring

  • 5+ years of experience in electrical engineering consulting, with strong experience in building electrical and land development/subdivision electrical systems.
  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering; registered or eligible as aP.Eng. with APEGA.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Canadian Electrical Code (CEC)
    • Alberta Building Code
    • Municipal standards, especially City of Calgary/utility requirements
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD; experience with Revit and lighting calculation software is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience with:
    • Power distribution systems
    • Fire alarm & life safety
    • Lighting and photometrics
    • Low-, medium-, and high-voltage systems
    • Subdivision electrical and communication design
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
