Assistant Project Manager - Controls
Position Overview
As an Assistant Project Manager - Controls, you'll support the successful execution of building automation, controls systems, and integrated mechanical projects by assisting the Project Manager in coordinating activities, ensuring alignment with scope, schedule, budget, and quality standards, and focusing on seamless controls integration within HVAC, plumbing, and energy solutions. This role contributes to delivering high-performance, sustainable outcomes for clients in commercial and critical environments across any of our operating companies. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist the Project Manager in planning, coordinating, and overseeing controls-related projects, including building automation systems (BAS), HVAC controls, energy management systems, and integrated mechanical/controls solutions.
  • Support the development and maintenance of project schedules, milestones, and resource allocation using industry-standard tools.
  • Track project costs, prepare cost projections, monitor budgets, and assist in identifying and managing variances or change orders.
  • Coordinate with internal teams (e.g., field technicians, engineers, subcontractors), vendors, and clients to ensure timely procurement, submittals, approvals, and installation of controls components.
  • Monitor project progress, conduct site visits as needed, and report on status, risks, issues, and performance metrics to the Project Manager and stakeholders.
  • Assist in quality control/assurance processes, ensuring compliance with project specifications, company standards, regulatory requirements, and safety protocols.
  • Help manage documentation, including contracts, RFIs, change requests, submittals, and close-out packages.
  • Support risk identification and mitigation efforts related to controls scope, technical integration, and project delivery.
  • Contribute to client communication, attending meetings and providing updates on project status and controls performance.
  • Participate in project handover, commissioning support, and post-project reviews to drive continuous improvement.

Supervisory Responsibilities
None (this role has no direct supervisory responsibilities but requires close collaboration with project managers, field teams, and other departments; may involve guiding or mentoring junior staff or interns as needed).
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Experience: Recent graduates with engineering degrees who have relevant experience or strong interest in commercial HVAC/controls systems are encouraged to apply. Candidates with 1-5 years of experience in project coordination, assistant project management, or controls/project controls roles within construction, mechanical services, HVAC, building automation, or related industries are also welcome.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Project Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver's license and clean driving record required; OSHA 10/30-hour certification encouraged (company support provided).
  • Physical Demands: Primarily office-based with frequent job-site visits; ability to walk active construction sites, climb ladders/stairs, lift light materials (plans, laptop), and travel regionally as needed; standard office mobility for computer work and meetings.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Professional office with hybrid options and active construction sites; exposure to varying weather, noise, dust, heights; must adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed boots) on sites-safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position.

Required Skills
  • Familiarity with building controls systems (e.g., BAS, PLCs, DDC, energy management) and integration with mechanical/HVAC systems preferred.
  • Understanding of project management principles, including scheduling, cost control, and risk management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Project, Word); experience with project management software (e.g., Procore, Primavera, AutoCAD, or similar) is a plus.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities to collaborate across teams and with clients/subcontractors.
  • Ability to travel to project sites as required and work in a fast-paced, field-oriented environment.
