What is an automation controls engineer?

Automation Controls Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain control systems that automate manufacturing and industrial processes. They typically work with hardware and software such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and robotic systems to ensure efficient and reliable operation of automated equipment. Their responsibilities include programming control systems, troubleshooting electrical and control issues, and collaborating with other engineers to optimize production processes. Automation Controls Engineers play a crucial role in improving productivity, safety, and quality in industries such as manufacturing, automotive, and energy.

What does an automation controls engineer do?

Automation controls engineers help create the layout of electrical and mechanical control systems. In this role, you may help program an automation process, modify existing programming when necessary, and help ensure the company is using the safest and most productive system possible for its needs. You may also be responsible for creating training documentation to show employees how to control and adjust their operations. Most automation control engineers work in manufacturing plants and similar companies where physical automation is used to speed up production tasks. This job should not be confused with automation programming outside of the manufacturing sector, such as software programming.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automation controls engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automation Controls Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, control systems, and automation, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with PLC programming, SCADA systems, HMI software, and certifications like Certified Automation Professional (CAP) are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding professionals apart in this field. These skills ensure reliable system integration, efficient troubleshooting, and successful collaboration in complex industrial environments.

What are some common challenges automation controls engineers face when working on new system integrations?

Automation Controls Engineers often encounter challenges such as compatibility issues between legacy equipment and new control systems, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, and software), and ensuring minimal downtime during system upgrades. Troubleshooting unforeseen problems during testing phases and maintaining clear documentation are also frequent hurdles. Proactive communication and thorough planning help mitigate these challenges and ensure smooth integration projects.

What is the difference between Automation Controls Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectAutomation Controls EngineerElectrical Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in electrical, mechanical, or automation engineering; certifications like Certified Automation Professional (CAP) are commonRequires a degree in electrical engineering; licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) may be preferred
Work EnvironmentWorks primarily in manufacturing, automation, and control system settingsWorks in various sectors including power, construction, and manufacturing, often focusing on electrical systems
Industry UsageCommonly employed in automation, process control, and manufacturing industriesUsed across power generation, construction, and industrial sectors

Automation Controls Engineers focus on designing, programming, and maintaining control systems for automation processes, while Electrical Engineers have a broader scope involving electrical system design and analysis. Both roles require strong technical skills and often overlap in industrial settings, but their primary responsibilities and certifications differ.

Job description

Who YOU are and what YOU can become

You will serve as the site technical authority for industrial control systems within one of the most complex and diverse manufacturing automation environments in the commercial aerospace aerostructures industry. As a member of the Manufacturing Automation and Development team-and the organization's first dedicated controls engineering role-you will help establish and grow a critical capability supporting production, capital projects, and advanced manufacturing initiatives. You will own controls architecture, lead and evaluate external automation integrators and machine builders, drive capital equipment specification and acceptance, and sustain the performance of automated systems across multiple aircraft programs. In parallel, you will lead internal controls development efforts with the same level of technical rigor.

Who WE are and where WE are going

At ST Engineering MRAS, our employees have amazing opportunities to work on advanced technologies and systems that support thousands of customers and millions of people worldwide every day. From the first flight across the Pacific Ocean to developing highly complex structures for the most popular aircraft in the world, we have come a long way always with a can-do approach to problem solving while delighting customers with our high say-do ratio. We are looking for people with innovative ideas and the drive to help us grow into the future.

A pioneer in the production and assembly of complex aerostructures including aircraft and rocket components, engine nacelle systems, thrust reversers and advanced composite products, we apply the latest digital technologies and automation in composite design and manufacturing that are second to none. At ST Engineering MRAS, we are also rapidly augmenting our maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capabilities leveraging the company's expanded aircraft nacelle portfolio as well as its materials and processing expertise.

What YOU will do

  • Establish site-level controls standards covering architecture, safety philosophy, platform prioritization, naming conventions, diagnostics, and version controlย
  • Serve as the internal technical authority over external automation integrators and machine builders, directing controls scope, challenging vendor architecture, and protecting procurement outcomesย
  • Author controls-specific Statements of Work and define FAT and SAT acceptance criteria for new automation capital acquisitionsย
  • Own the controls scope from User Requirements Specification through FAT through SAT through production handoverย
  • Develop and own PLC logic, motion programs, and control system architecture across facility systems spanning Siemens TIA Portal, Rockwell, FANUC, ABB, KUKA, and other platformsย
  • Configure, program, and support industrial robotic systems including multi-axis robotic cells, coordinated robot-to-PLC interfaces, and vision-guided robotic applicationsย
  • Design, implement, andย validateย safety PLC systems and machine risk reduction strategiesย in accordance withย ISO 13849 and IEC 62061ย
  • Develop and support HMI systems across multiple platforms and configure industrial network architectures includingย Profinet,ย EtherNet/IP,ย EtherCAT, and OPC-UAย
  • Lead the design and development of internally built controls and automation systems including next-generation manufacturing technology programs currently in active developmentย
  • Provide senior-level technical escalation support for production-critical systemsย operatingย under program rate, quality, and uptime requirementsย
  • Develop the controls knowledge and capability of the broader automation team through applied collaborationย

What YOU must bring to Succeed

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field with a minimum five years of industrial controls engineering experience at a machine builder, systems integrator, or advanced automated manufacturing facility producing complex machinery.ย  Or equivalent combination of education and handson industrial controls experience is required.ย ย
  • Experience authoring controls-specific Statements of Work or technical acceptance criteria for capital equipment procurementย
  • Direct experience leading orย participatingย in Factory Acceptance Tests and Site Acceptance Tests with external vendors or machine buildersย
