Job Description and Responsibilities
We are seeking a Process Automation Technician to join our team in Portland, Oregon. This position reports to the Process Automation Supervisor and is responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting automated systems that support steel production. This is a hands-on role in a fast-paced environment where you will help keep operations running efficiently while building your technical skills in industrial automation.
  • Support 24/7 mill operations by resolving equipment and system issues

  • Troubleshoot and support PLC, SCADA, and HMI control systems across mill operations
  • Perform routine inspections and operational checks on automation and gauging systems

  • Work closely with production, maintenance, and engineering teams to identify and fix problems

  • Assist with installation, commissioning, and upgrades of automation equipment
  • Document work and communicate updates clearly across shifts
  • Support calibration and maintenance of instrumentation and control systems
  • Update technical documentation, drawings, and procedures
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts to increase efficiency and product quality

Requirements
  • Associate degree in Electronics, Automation, Mechatronics, or related field, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • 1-3+ years of experience in industrial automation, manufacturing, or process control
  • Experience with PLC systems (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens)
  • Familiarity with SCADA and HMI systems
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across electrical, mechanical, and control systems
  • Ability to read electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic schematics
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate across teams
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts in a 24/7 steel mill environment

Preferred:
  • Experience with Ignition HMI/SCADA platform (Inductive Automation)
  • Experience with iba DAQ and visualization software
  • Programming experience (C#, VB, .Net, C, Python)

Work Environment
  • Industrial steel mill environment with exposure to noise, vibration, and high heat

  • Work performed both in a control room/desk setting and on the mill floor

  • Regular exposure to active equipment, including moving machinery and electrical systems

  • Fast-paced production environment requiring awareness of safety procedures and surroundings

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to perform light work, including lifting up to 20 lbs occasionally
