Automation Apprenticeship information

What is an automation apprenticeship?

An Automation Apprenticeship is a structured training program that combines hands-on experience with classroom learning to develop skills in automation technologies. Apprentices typically work with robotics, control systems, and industrial automation while receiving mentorship from experienced professionals. This role prepares individuals for careers in manufacturing, engineering, or IT automation by providing real-world problem-solving experience. The program usually lasts one to three years and may lead to certifications or full-time employment in the automation field.

What kinds of projects or tasks will I typically be involved with during an automation apprenticeship?

As an Automation Apprentice, you can expect to be involved in hands-on tasks such as assembling, wiring, and troubleshooting control panels, assisting with programming or modifying automated equipment, and performing preventative maintenance on robotic systems. You will often work alongside experienced engineers or technicians, learning how to interpret technical drawings, diagnose system faults, and implement process improvements. Most apprenticeships combine classroom instruction with practical, on-the-job training, giving you exposure to a variety of automation technologies and industry settings. This foundation prepares you for a successful career with opportunities for advancement in automation engineering, controls, or robotics fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the automation apprenticeship position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Automation Apprenticeship, candidates typically need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering principles, problem-solving skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), automation software, and basic programming languages such as Python or Ladder Logic is often required, while industry-recognized certifications like OSHA or Siemens can be advantageous. Strong attention to detail, eagerness to learn, effective communication, and the ability to work well on a team are key soft skills for success. These combined abilities enable apprentices to safely and efficiently support industrial automation projects and grow into skilled automation technicians.
