As America's leading manufacturer and supplier of furniture and equipment for K-12 schools, Virco employs approximately 700 people nationwide. Our 560,000 square-foot Torrance, California headquarters features a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, as does our Conway, Arkansas location, which has approximately 1,750,000 square feet of operational space. Large distribution centers in Torrance and Conway facilitate the quick, efficient shipment of Virco products.

Job Purpose:

To assist in the installation, maintenance, and replacement of automation systems at key points in the production process. Under the direction of the Senior Automation Technician, troubleshoot

nonfunctioning components, including servos, sensors, and control components.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists in the development of new automation technologies for manufacturing processes or to improve existing technologies.

  • Assists in the installation, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repair of industrial control systems, such as PLC's or other computerized process control systems including those that monitor and regulate operations or machinery.

  • Assists in the installation and repair of electrical components such as motors, switches, relays or sensors.

  • Help to maintain smooth operation of automated systems, assist manufacturing technical support technicians when needed to help guide troubleshooting of down equipment.

  • Assists with preventative, predictive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on manufacturing production equipment.

  • Assists in the modification of automated PLCs, programs, and equipment to improve performance and meet new project needs.

Apprenticeship Functions:

  • Successfully complete each phase of the apprenticeship program.

  • Demonstrate competency in required skills before advancing to the next level.

  • Meet attendance, performance, and training requirements established by the program.

  • Accept increasing responsibility and complexity of assignments as skills develop.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Must have basic knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and fluid power technologies and repair.

  • Organizational and problem-solving skills.

  • Entry mechanical aptitude and communication skills.

  • Must have experience utilizing Microsoft Office for E-mail, Word, and Excel.

  • Must be able to efficiently use Windows based computers and perform basic networking tasks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience utilizing CMMS software such as SAP, EQUIPAC, etc.

  • Be able to read and understand electrical wiring diagrams and industrial control systems.

Physical Requirements:

Able to lift up to 50 pounds from knee to waist level. Occasionally pushes and/or pulls up to 50 pounds using some type of moving equipment. Frequently bends and stoops. Frequently walks throughout the 8 to 10 hours of the shift. Must be able to withstand 8 to 10 hours standing on a concrete surface. Occasionally climbs up the ladder. Will occasionally be exposed to chemicals, dust, heat, cold, gas, and/or fumes. Must be able to adjust to normal plant environmental conditions (above moderate heat and cold) and to adapt quickly to physical applications requiring varying motor skills.
