What is an automated systems technician?

Automated Systems Technicians are skilled professionals who install, maintain, and repair automated machinery and control systems used in manufacturing, industrial facilities, and other automation-driven environments. Their work often involves troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and computer-based systems to ensure smooth and efficient operations. They may also program and configure control systems, perform preventive maintenance, and update or modify equipment as needed. This role requires knowledge of electronics, robotics, and software used to operate automated equipment.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an automated systems technician?

To thrive as an Automated Systems Technician, you need strong knowledge of electronics, automation controls, and mechanical systems, often backed by an associate degree or technical certification in automation or industrial maintenance. Familiarity with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and diagnostic software is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and communication skills help technicians troubleshoot issues efficiently and collaborate with other team members. These abilities ensure optimal system performance, minimize downtime, and maintain safe, efficient operations in automated environments.
