Job description

OverviewThe Principal Electrical Engineer is the primary hands-on technical authority in electrical engineering and is responsible for establishing the electrical system architecture, setting the direction in product development, and spearheading the development of the next generation of products and the improvement/maintenance of current designs, with minimal administrative duties. Represents the company's position on dental industry issues and new product introductions and is a technical "face" of A-dec.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Partners with Project Chiefs, Product Management, Engineering Management, and Technology Research to develop architecture and platforms for current and future generations of products.
  • Leads new product design, sustaining engineering efforts, and ensures product complies with all technical regulatory requirements.
  • Provides technical analysis and recommendations to strategic planning teams, serving as the champion for strategic system decisions.
  • Participates in recruiting and training team members to build a talented engineering organization with a strong design presence while imparting knowledge through education of technical mentorship of less senior engineers.
  • Using considerable independent judgment, assures technology is appropriate for the product, the product is designed to meet the needs of the customer, schedules are met, regulatory matters are properly addressed, resources are used efficiently, design activities are well coordinated, and technical conflicts associated with competing ideas and priorities are quickly resolved.
  • Actively maintains design skills and knowledge of product technologies by staying current in manufacturing technologies, competitive technologies, ancillary equipment technologies, testing, the dental equipment industry, engineering trends, regulations and standards, patents, and project management.
  • Assures self and subordinate staff participates in professional organizations and other networks to remain current with technological innovations.
  • Mentors others and independently analyzes unusually complex problems to determine highly innovative and ingenious solutions, theories, and concepts.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Mastery of designing electronics for real-world robustness and high reliability.
  • Mastery of PCB design from concept through manufacturing transfer, including Design-For-Manufacturability analysis.
  • Mastery of designing and testing to EMI/EMC standards such as FCC and CISPR.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of electrical engineering principles and experience in complex problem solving.
    • Comprehensive knowledge regarding design details of DC-DC converters, embedded microcontrollers, memory interfaces, sensors, and other technologies.
    • In-depth knowledge of Altium Designer or similar PCB design software including areas of both schematic capture and PCB layout.
    • Thorough knowledge of using electrical simulation software such as LTSpice.
    • Thorough knowledge of CAN bus, Ethernet, and wireless network communication technologies.
    • Thorough knowledge of designing systems with high-speed differential signals >1GHz.
    • Thorough knowledge of designing for signal integrity of Analog Circuits.
    • Working knowledge of mechanical CAD tools, such as AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor.
    • Ability to create/manage a vision and think strategically, plan and organize, innovate, analyze complex data and situations, and exercise sound judgment. Must be able to communicate that vision, motivate and lead employees, and collaborate with other teams.
    • Ability to clearly assess, articulate, and manage risk with a sense of urgency to meet product requirements, on schedule, and on budget. Must be able to see the big picture, prepare contingency plans, and ensure execution of plans through effective organizational awareness.
    • Ability to provide engineering solutions to a variety of problems. Skilled to apply and fully use design engineering principles, concepts, and techniques.
    • A desire to stay active in technology development and architecture.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Typically has greater than fifteen (15) years of relevant professional or technical engineering experience of increasing responsibility and difficulty of assignment.
  • Experience designing regulated equipment. Ideally this experience is in a medical or similar safety-conscious, highly regulated industry.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise maneuver up to 35 pounds with or without assistance on a routine basis. Must have manual hand dexterity to grasp, operate tools and equipment repetitively. Able to walk, stand, sit, bend, reach, and occasionally kneel, climb steps, and twist throughout an entire shift. Some areas may be exposed to chemicals, noise, vibration and /or dust, and require the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); such as, but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, foot protection, etc.
