What is an audio visual project manager?

Audio Visual (AV) Project Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the planning, coordination, and execution of audio visual projects, such as installing AV systems in offices, schools, or event venues. They manage teams, budgets, timelines, and client communications to ensure projects are completed successfully and meet client expectations. These managers often coordinate with vendors, technicians, and other stakeholders to ensure all technical requirements are met and that installations run smoothly. Their expertise is crucial in delivering high-quality AV solutions on time and within budget.

What does an audio visual project manager do?

The responsibilities of an audiovisual (AV) project manager include supervising all personnel and activities related to audiovisual installation, construction, financing, scheduling, coordinating required resources, and collecting materials for an event. In this career, you are also responsible for ensuring a perfect execution while staying within the budget. You consult with clients on event details, maintain the contract, and ensure client satisfaction. Other duties include coordinating installation, programming equipment, testing, and troubleshooting. You are the primary person for all internal and external communications and documentation. You provide progress reports to the necessary parties or individuals at various points throughout the project. As an audio visual project manager, you travel and support event production at various venues including hotels, schools, and convention centers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an audio visual project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Audio Visual Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, technical knowledge of AV systems, and experience with budgeting and scheduling, often supported by a degree in a related field or PMP certification. Familiarity with AV design software, control systems (like Crestron or Extron), and project management tools such as MS Project or Smartsheet is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills help in coordinating teams and managing client expectations. These qualifications ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the technical standards required by clients.

What are some common challenges audio visual project managers face when coordinating installations across multiple sites?

Audio Visual Project Managers frequently encounter challenges such as managing tight timelines, ensuring equipment availability, and coordinating with various vendors and on-site teams across different locations. Effective communication and meticulous planning are crucial to address unexpected site-specific issues, such as infrastructure limitations or last-minute changes in client requirements. Additionally, aligning all stakeholders—including clients, technicians, and subcontractors—requires strong organizational skills to keep projects on schedule and within budget.

Job description

AV Project Manager

Lead Hawaii's Most Complex AV Projects

Build projects you'll be proud to put your name on.

Not every AV project needs a Project Manager.

Some require someone who can coordinate owners, architects, electrical contractors, consultants, programmers, installers, and manufacturers while keeping a complex project on schedule and under control.

For more than 55 years, The Audio Visual Company (AVCO) has designed, integrated, and supported audiovisual systems throughout Hawaii. Our work spans higher education, corporate campuses, healthcare, government, military, hospitality, and public facilities. We aren't looking for someone to simply manage paperwork—we're looking for someone who wants to lead successful projects from kickoff through final commissioning.

If you're looking for challenging work, a strong technical team, and the opportunity to influence how projects are delivered, we'd like to talk.

What You'll Do

  • Lead commercial AV integration projects from contract award through closeout.
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, procurement, documentation, and change orders.
  • Coordinate with owners, architects, consultants, general contractors, electrical contractors, and low-voltage partners.
  • Conduct project meetings and communicate project status with confidence.
  • Work closely with Design Engineering, Programming, Installation, Service, and Sales.
  • Identify project risks early and develop practical solutions.
  • Ensure projects are delivered safely, professionally, and to AVCO quality standards.

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years managing commercial audiovisual integration projects.
  • Strong understanding of AV system architecture and construction workflows.
  • Ability to read construction drawings and specifications.
  • Experience coordinating multiple trades on active construction projects.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • CTS certification preferred (CTS-I or CTS-D is a plus).
  • Experience with Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, Procore, or similar software is beneficial.

Our Standards

We believe quality is a habit—not a final inspection.

At AVCO, we expect our Project Managers to:

  • Lead with professionalism and accountability.
  • Communicate problems early instead of managing surprises.
  • Deliver organized documentation.
  • Maintain accurate schedules and financial awareness.
  • Support field teams rather than manage from a desk.
  • Hold themselves and their teams to a high standard of workmanship.
  • Represent AVCO with integrity on every project.

Why AVCO?

  • Established Hawaii company with more than 55 years of success.
  • Diverse commercial projects across multiple industries.
  • Experienced engineering, programming, installation, and service teams.
  • Long-term customer relationships and repeat business.
  • Modern tools, standardized workflows, and ongoing investment in technology.
  • Opportunities for career advancement into senior leadership.

Relocation Opportunities

If you're currently living outside Hawaii, we welcome your application.

Relocation assistance may be available for highly qualified candidates with commercial AV integration experience. If you've been looking for an opportunity to combine a rewarding career with Hawaii's lifestyle, we'd like to start that conversation.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation based on experience
  • Medical benefits
  • Retirement plan
  • Paid vacation and holidays
  • Ongoing manufacturer certifications and technical training
  • Company vehicle (position dependent)
  • Company phone and laptop

Join Our Team

We're not looking for someone who wants just another job.

We're looking for someone who wants to build exceptional systems, lead successful projects, and help shape the future of one of Hawaii's most respected AV integration companies.

If that describes you, we'd like to hear from you.
