Towson University (TU) is one of the nation's top 100 public universities. Located north of Baltimore, TU currently enrolls over 19,000 students and is the second-largest university in the prestigious University System of Maryland. Position:
The College of Fine Arts and Communication invites applications for a tenure-track, 9-month Assistant Professor position in the Film, Audio, Media Arts Department. Preferred start date August 2027.
Qualifications:
Master of Fine Arts or doctorate degree in audio and media production, or a related field, received by June 2027. The Film, Audio, Media Arts Department seeks candidates with a vision for the future of audio production for media and audio content creation. Demonstrated expertise in digital audio workstation software is required; experience with Avid's Pro Tools preferred. Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following is required: studio sound recording and mixing, sound design for visual media, podcasting and/or radio production. Experience with audio over internet protocol (AoIP) systems, particularly Audinate's Dante network, is preferred but not required. Demonstrated success in teaching, or demonstrated potential to teach audio production, audio studio, and/or audio broadcast courses at the undergraduate level is required. A demonstrated record of related scholarship/artistic research/professional activity is required. Applicants with additional specialties in multimedia production, live sound production, sound-based installation and media art, or sound theory and aesthetics are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities:
Research-active faculty teach 6 classes over a 9-month academic year (3 per semester) with undergraduate class size averaging 20 students per class. Undergraduate teaching is expected to include foundational audio production courses for both audio and film-focused students as well as intermediate and advanced courses focusing on specific aspects of audio production utilizing our recording and mixing studios. There may be opportunities to develop new courses in the candidate's area of expertise and interest. Undergraduate advising is part of the position's teaching responsibilities. Scholarly/artistic research productivity and service to the department, college, and university are expected. Service responsibilities will include leadership of student organizations that produce media content.
The Department: The Film, Audio, Media Arts Department is the largest and most comprehensive media and film department in Maryland. FAMA provides a rigorous media arts education in which students learn to tell their own stories, hone their craft, and make meaningful media. FAMA students choose from one of three concentrations: Film/Video/Digital Media, Audio, and Film and Media Studies. Within these concentrations, our 400+ FAMA majors and minors develop skills in writing, media history and criticism, and professional media production for narrative, documentary, experimental, and new media forms. Towson University's Film, Audio, Media Arts Department is made up of 15 full-time and over 20 part-time faculty. In academic year 2027-2028, the Film, Audio, Media Arts Department will be moving into the newly renovated and reconstructed Smith Hall that will include state-of-the-art studios, labs, production facilities, classrooms, and a cinema theatre.

• a portfolio/reel (submitted as a PDF with descriptions and URLs of media projects) demonstrating your creative/scholarly work

Targeted salary range: $68,000 - $70,000 commensurate with experience.
