Job description

The KMBC 9 / KCWE 29 Internship Program is a paid, rigorous and highly competitive hands-on experience that provides individuals with the opportunity to learn about the operations of a broadcast television station. As an intern in Studio Productions, you are part of the team that is "Kansas City's News Leader".  For every person you see on camera, there are many more with exciting responsibilities in the KMBC 9 Newsroom.  You'll learn the technical aspects of live news broadcasts.  Behind the scenes training will include learning robotic cameras, floor directing, lighting and show set-ups.  Interns are required to be comfortable with height, able to lift light equipment, and work non-traditional hours.

ROBOTIC CAMERA OPERATION

  • Camera shot composition

  • Shot sequencing

  • Controlling robotic camera pedestals

SHOW SET-UP

  • Pre-production planning

  • Preparing for lighting, backdrops, and props

  • Prepare, distribute and place microphones used in live broadcast

  • Set up audio board for all audio sources and mix minus

  • Staff coordination

DIRECTING

  • Operation of automated studio production system. Learning coding for all elements of a newscast, including live studio cameras, live remotes, graphics and video playback systems.                                 

  • Provide creative input and will work with the newscast producer and production crew

  • Be responsible for clean technical execution of the look of the newscast

  • Experience with ENPS, VIZRT graphics and Bitcentral video playback will be helpful

Your first day at the station is set aside for orientation which Must be attended.  Plan to work three days a week, eight hours each shift with varying schedules. During your internship you should always check in with your assigned advisor upon entering the building. 

Securing housing and transportation during the internship are the responsibility of the intern.  KMBC 9 / KCWE 29 cannot offer support in this area.
