Intern Bioinformatics information

What is an intern bioinformatics?

An Intern Bioinformatics job involves analyzing biological data using computational tools and algorithms. Interns typically assist in managing large datasets, developing scripts, and running statistical analyses to support research projects. They work closely with bioinformaticians, biologists, and data scientists to interpret genetic, genomic, or proteomic data. This role requires knowledge of programming languages like Python or R, as well as familiarity with databases and bioinformatics tools. It provides hands-on experience in applying computational techniques to solve biological problems.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as an intern bioinformatics?

As a Bioinformatics Intern, you can expect to support ongoing research by processing and analyzing large-scale biological datasets, such as genomic or transcriptomic sequences. Your daily tasks might include writing scripts for data analysis, visualizing results, and assisting with the interpretation of findings alongside senior scientists and lab teams. You may also help in maintaining databases, preparing reports, and contributing to publications or presentations. This is a team-oriented role where collaboration with biologists, data scientists, and other researchers is common, offering valuable exposure to real-world scientific workflows and opportunities for hands-on learning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the intern bioinformatics position, and why are they important?

To excel as an Intern Bioinformatics, you should have a foundational understanding of biology, statistics, and computer science, often pursued through relevant coursework or a degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field. Competence with bioinformatics tools such as BLAST, Python, R, and familiarity with next-generation sequencing data analysis is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex findings to multidisciplinary teams are valuable soft skills in this position. These abilities are crucial for interpreting biological data accurately, effectively contributing to research projects, and thriving in collaborative scientific environments.

Job description

Genomics Co-Op
Major Tasks We are seeking a highly motivated Genomics Co-op/Intern to support the development and application of long-read sequencing workflows for novel haplotype discovery in diverse germplasm. This project focuses on leveraging PacBio HiFi sequencing and advanced bioinformatics approaches to identify genetic variation beyond single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including structural variants (SVs) and copy number variants (CNVs), that may contribute to valuable agronomic traits. The successful candidate will work at the interface of computational biology, genomics, and plant breeding to develop scalable analytical pipelines, characterize novel haplotypes in diverse germplasm, and evaluate strategies for incorporating genetic variation into breeding applications.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support the development and application of long-read sequencing workflows for novel haplotype discovery in diverse germplasm.
  • Leverage PacBio HiFi sequencing and advanced bioinformatics approaches to identify genetic variation beyond SNPs, including SVs and CNVs.
  • Work at the interface of computational biology, genomics, and plant breeding to develop scalable analytical pipelines.
  • Characterize novel haplotypes in diverse germplasm.
  • Evaluate strategies for incorporating genetic variation into breeding applications.

WHO YOU ARE
Education
  • Pursuing a degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, Genetics, Plant Science or related field.

Technical skills
  • Experience with long-read sequencing analysis (PacBio, ONT, etc)
  • Experience with variant calling (SNPs, indels, SV, CNV)
  • Knowledge of command-line interfaces for bioinformatic tools
  • Python and/or R experience
  • Knowledge of population genetics, haplotypes, and genomic diversity.

Preferred competencies
  • Scientific curiosity and problem-solving mindset
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks
  • Effective written and verbal communication
  • Collaborative approach to multidisciplinary research
