Job description

WHO WE ARE We are the Metropolitan Council, the regional government for the seven-county Twin Cities metropolitan area. We plan 30 years ahead for the future of the metropolitan area and provide regional transportation, wastewater, and housing services. More information about us on our website.

Metro Transit is one of the country's largest transit systems, employs more than 3,000 people, and provides more than 80 million rides a year through an integrated network of buses, light rail and commuter trains, as well as resources for those who carpool, vanpool, walk or bike in the Twin Cities. How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region: The Public Facilities Worker maintains and cleans public facilities, transit centers, park and rides, bus shelters and light rail stations of the Metropolitan Council.

This position will establish a six (6) month eligibility pool for current and future openings. Posted continuous with the first review of applications starting on 4/16/2026. Hourly Pay Range: For candidates newly hired into the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) contract, starting wage is set by the ATU contract.

Internal hires will follow Metropolitan Council's union wage guidelines. Hire: $24.63 hourly After year one: $28.15 After year two: $31.67 After year three: $35.19 What you would do in this job Public Facility Cleaning: Clean shelters using power washers that are vehicle-mounted, trailer-mounted, and/or mobile. Keep shelters free of trash, graffiti, and other materials

Inspect and clean park and rides, transit centers, and/or rail stations/platforms for trash, litter, graffiti, etc. Clean bus and rail stations and transit centers - outside, inside, restrooms, operators' and passenger areas. Clean driver layovers - restrooms, litter, graffiti, etc.

Public Facility Outdoor Cleaning - Snow and ice removal: Keep areas free from snow and ice using ice melt products and snow removal equipment. Keep a path from shelters to bus stops and the shelter perimeter clear of snow and ice using shovels, scrapers, and walk-behind snow removal equipment and ice melt products. Keep assigned ADA sites free of snow and ice as assigned using shovels, scrapers, and walk-behind snow removal equipment.

Assist with snow removal at park and rides, transit stations, and rail facilities as assigned using shovels, scrapers and walk-behind snow removal equipment. Public Facility Outdoor Cleaning - Lawn Care: Operate lawn care equipment up to 24 inches wide, including push mowers, weed whips, and leaf blowers. Keep shelter floors and perimeters, rail stations and platforms, transit stations, and park & ride areas (parking lots, curb lines, sidewalks, fence lines) free of weeds and brush using weed whips, leaf blowers, and weed control products.

Keep landscaped areas free of paper, debris, and litter. General duties: Report problems to Supervisor, Public Facilities Foreperson, or Control Center as appropriate. Maintain daily log of work activities.

Assist facility technicians as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned. What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications) Education/Experience: High School diploma or GED Licenses/Certifications/Registration: Valid Driver's License and a good driving record.

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications): Experience with snow removal, lawn care, and cleaning equipment (power washers). Experience working in a commercial or industrial cleaning environment. Experience working with diverse populations and understanding the value different experiences bring to the workplace.

What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job: Ability to read, write and communicate in English. Ability to work well with others and with the public. Ability to record numbers legibly.

Ability to record work efforts, generate and close work orders. Ability to operate walk-behind snow removal and lawn care equipment. Ability to get to work locations where bus service is not available.

Ability to operate basic hand tools. Ability to hook up and haul trailer behind vehicle. Ability to back up and park trailer and equipment.

Ability to work in an environment with loud noise and risk of electrical shock. Works near moving traffic or equipment. Exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, human and animal waste, and vibration.

Works in wet humid conditions and high precarious places. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold and extreme hot. Physical Requirements: Ability to walk, stand, climb stairs, bend or stoop for entire eight-hour shift.

Ability to work all shifts. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, and to exert and force up to and more than 100 pounds with assistance. What steps the recruitment process involves: We review your minimum qualifications.

Work Record Evaluation for Internal ATU applicants. We rate your education and experience. We conduct a structured panel interview.

Once you have successfully completed the steps above, then: If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail.

The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation. If you are already an employee of the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (if moving from a non-safety sensitive position to a safety sensitive position) and criminal background check if the job you're applying for is safety sensitive, is a supervisory or management job, is in the Finance, Information Services, Audit, or Human Resources departments, or has access to financial records, files/databases, cash, vouchers or transit fare cards. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the position.
